    Hi,

I stumbled across my dad's old Sony T170P and it appears to not be working anymore. I don't have the charger, so I stuck in a 19.5V Sony adapter into the 16V socket on the laptop to try it out. That shouldn't have messed up anything, right?

Anyway, nothing really happened and I can't get the computer to turn on. My dad suggests that the spot where power connects to the laptop might be fried, but I'm not completely sure. Anyone have ideas on what could possibly be wrong? Perhaps a list of common vaio problems that cause the laptops to not start up? I'm gonna open it up tomorrow and see if I can spot what is wrong.

Here is a picture, in case it's a rare laptop--it's an ultraportable with a 10.9 inch screen. Small little thing that I would absolutely love to have with me in college next year...

Thanks a ton for any input!

I have the same problem like yours, my ac adapter was stolen by the fu*king theft so I buy a cheap replacement adapter. Then I found my motherboard overheated, now I can't boot the notebook normally, I have to unplug and plug in again the CMOS battery everytime i want to boot my notebook.

Yesterday I run the motherboard only with HDD, Memory, DVD-RW, and Processor, I plug in the power cord and switch it on, I'm Surprised it can run normally, I attached an external CRT monitor and keyboard also can run normally, I try to shutdown and restart so many times it can run normally like a new computer.

Hmm, I think there is still hope for the motherboard to works normally, i do found a little gold tab on the motherboard which they called SPR with numbers, i don't know what is that for, but I'm sure it's a security tab which SONY implements on the motherboard so when the tab is not pushed down then the notebook will not boot. i try to repair the SPR stands OFF because I'm sure they used it to ground the motherboard.

I will ask the technician to check whether they can repair the SPR for me, hope this can help the motherboard.

    Plugging in a 19,5 Volt plug into a 16V connection isn't a good idea.
Would you run a 12V lightbulb at 14V? If you will it'll die quicker.
