Here is a bug in every shop bought Sony Vaio Shipped Vista Install / Build I have seen so far...

You can run a system restore or walk into a shop to demo it...

Make sure UAC is turned on (which is the normal setting after a system restore etc).... Right Click on the Vista Start Menu button and set your Start Menu to Classic Mode... Now go into programs and drag and drop one of the icons to a different place.... Assuming you chose an icon that gives a UAC popup (most of them) you will then see explorer crash with the mssage "windows explorer has stopped working".

Why does it occur? On top of Vista Sony add a zillion rubbish applications (many written by Sony who itself can not write Software to save its life) and one of them (although I never figured out which one) is doing this. It must have some kind of Vista buggy Explorer Shell Extension.

How do you fix it... You need to do a system restore and cancel out of the final application install. Eg as described here:

How to setup the VGN-AR31S running vista... clean install and WinDVD etc

How rubbish is Sony - it boggles the mind. They have known about this for months but do nothing at least as of the last machine I tried in a shop three weeks ago.

I've noticed this with my system but thought it was just me, I didn't realise it was widespread. This happens with the standard vista start menu, I don't use the classic start menu.

I routinely get this Vista crash/error even after semi-clean install. I think it is a Vista/explorer bug.

Ah maybe with the standard menu as well.. I bought a sony laptop, turned it to classic as i always do, tried to drag explorer to the root of the start menu, also as I always do, and bang. It was the first thing i did on the machine and i have to say i was totally shocked! About a month ago I bought another Sony and same thing. I called Sony and they said it was a known problem. Basically the Sony build is totally screwed by all that junk software! Anyway at least you have instructions for a way out if you want to fix it. Once you have done all that it will not crash.
