My FE-590's cover is worn out. The original white paint in some parts has turned blackish. I didn't scratch it or anything. It just wore out. Has anyone had any experience in this? If so, what did you do?

    Thanks

    wow, it's really bad
i have FE790, but they're really the same things. I don't have that problem because it's only been two months or three, but the black plastic in the back now turns white :D, i don't have a notebook backpack, and carry it to school every single day
    bottomline: don't buy Vaio

Maybe you ought to have opted for a carbon fiber SZ instead?

Well I wouldn't say don't buy Vaio. Me and crappyGPU are all proud Vaio owners. Its just that all computers will wear out. It doesnt matter if its HP, Dell, Toshiba, or Sony. And I do not have crappyGPUs problem....

Bottom Line: Get a notebook cover or case

The material determines whether the computer will wear out or not. If the notebook is made of high quality carbon fiber or anodized aluminum, then the material should not wear out.

Bottom Line: Get a notebook built with better materials. You can have the FE in a case and the palm rests will eventually turn color... Or better yet, you might as well cover your entire notebook in plastic bags.

Vaio so how do you handle ur vaio on a daily basis? how often do u move it around. I'm looking at and FE vaio as an option to buy. checked it out at the sony style center today. beautiful screen from what i've seen. but i cannot claim to have seen to many notebook screens. how do u feel about the FE series overall? in my country they're having a really great promotion, that's why i'm considering it.

All VAIOs are splendid, period. They are better than all competing brands (Dell, HP, Compaq, Toshiba, Asus, Acer, etc....)

The FE is the best laptop/computer that I have owned...it is amazing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the palm rests as maomanman claimed...
I dont know where he is getting that info since he does not own an FE. I did not handle my Vaio that well so maybe thats why it wore out. I would recommend getting a protective backpack/case to carry all notebook computers.

The FE Is way better than the Dell E1505 or Asus or HP.

All SONY Screens are simply the BEST... the Xbrite technology is AWESOME!

Overall....the best buy for the money, quality, style, and brand.
Sony is known for its excellent Japanese electronics!!

Ok. I find this ironic. This post is completely arrogant.
First of all, let's not forget that your opinion on the FE being the "best and better than the E1505 or ASUS or HP" is an OPINION, not a fact. You've carried that too far.
Secondly, it's ignorant to simply assume that I do not own a FE. Where did you get that info? I might have one, or two, or a billion of them sitting here!
Thirdly, I think you did not comprehend what i'm implying about the palm rests. I said the palm rests will "eventually" wear out, and NO WHERE DID I SAY there's something wrong with the palm rest. The reason why the FE's palm rests will wear out like many notebooks is because the palm rests are painted white on top of plastic. When sweat comes in contact with the paint, it'll wear off over time, like many notebooks. Plastic is plastic. There's no way around it. I could even be extremely caustic and say that the plastic is of the quality of coke bottles, according to this review: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2800

"The hand rest area and most of the area around the keyboard is made from some material that feels like the plastic that Coke bottles are made from. I don't know what Sony was thinking when they decided to use this material. It is by far the worst feeling material of any notebook I have laid hands on so far."

Here's my question: Where are YOU getting this info? Question yourself before you question others, Mr. Hypocrite.

Did you know that all the brands you mentioned sometimes outsource their design and production to ODMs such as ASUS, Compal, etc....

... and the XBRITE technology you're talking about is a screen manufactured by either Sharp, LG-Phillips, Samsung, etc... which is used in other notebooks such as Dell, HP, Sony, etc....

Sony just provides support, they probably don't design and manufacture VAIOs.

    lol

Anyway, I think the process of making the white finish of your FE lid (made of magnesium alloy) is the cause of your problem.

Yes, jsis is absolutely right. Sony does not make their own notebooks. In fact, they are actually supplied by ODMs such as ASUS and Quanta. Trubrite, and xbrite are just names. What really matters is the manufacture of the lcd, whether it's AUO, CMOS, etc.

It doesnt matter because the XBRITE found on a Sony is still better than a true life on a dell etc...

Oh and I KNOW that you dont have a Sony FE for sure..I just know...
you had a Dell and know supposedly an Asus.

Paint will wear off no matter what, whether it's sooner or later. if ur palms are constantly sweating while using the palm rests, the paint will wear off. if u dont take good care of the notebook, the paint will chip off, if you dont do anything with the notebook but use it normally, THE PAINT WILL STILL WEAR OFF! Why do you think your 10 yr old car's paint wears out? why are antique cars repainted? paint will always wear out, unless there's an extra layer of glossy coating or there's no paint to begin with (Just the pure material).

So yeah, paint will wear off anyways. I am not talking about Sony specifically. Unless your notebook is the $2800 ASUS VX2 with 100% carbon fiber and glossy coatings, paint will wear out.

I have the FE790. I've had it since early September 06. I use it everyday and carry it to places where laptops shouldn't go...

My FE is in wonderful condition -- not a scratch or a removal of any paint.

RedSensiStar that's good to hear. i just bought an FE with very similar specs as you but its FE35GP...i dunno maybe its malaysian model number. you must be treating it like a baby no? haha i know i do a bit. bought a nice targus backpack to carry it in. its my first, and i spent alot of money on it so must take care of it. Quite happy with it, any minor annoyances I have with it, don't make me feel any regret in buying it. But regarding the paint issue, I downloaded a teardown guide for the sony FE in the event that i'd want to repaint it myself later (AFTER the warranty expires :)).
