    I'm looking at getting a custom F series (F12) - F Series : VAIO and Computing : Models : Sony

On the customization page it says "usually ships in 2-3 weeks", is this due to the fact the new range hasn't been released yet? (does anyone know the date?) Or is the standard build time 2-3 weeks?

    Thanks!

Neither. It's due to the latest business craze, "lean manufacturing", which basically means shortening the production pipeline and reducing inventory to what's in the pipeline + 1. The plus is that you don't burn in with inventory you haven't sold, but the negative is that you half the time won't have enough in stock to fill orders, and customers will have to wait. Sometimes they go elsewhere, so it's a trade-off.
