Hello! You'll probably notice that this is my first post on the forums, so please let me if I unknowingly violate a rule.

A year ago I had a Vaio VGN-TX17GP. I loved that thing, it was the best laptop I ever had and due to circumenstance I had to give it away. Two laptops later, I can't believe I did that... The portability of the thing, the processing power (it used to do everything I'd want to do on a laptop at what seemed like a high speed to me) and it was all-around awesome. :)

So, I decided to sell my current laptop (a horrible, bulky 15" Macbook pro) and buy it again! Unfortunately, it seems the TX was replaced by the TZ and there's no where where I can get them brand new and NOT refurbished.

Can someone please let me know of a good place to get them new? Also, if I have to get a refurbished version, what's the finish of the cases? I'd like mine not to be covered in blemishes and scratches...

Thanks for the reply, Phil! That's the first thing I did. You see, I want specifically this design of the TX:

    Sony VAIO VGN-TXN27N/B

At least, that's the name in the US market. I can't find it for sale new. There's another Vaio TX with a charcoal black colour, but it it has 1 GB of RAM:

    Sony VAIO VGN-TXN25N/B

Is it possible to upgrade it?? Basically what I want is charcoal black TX with the best specs that I can get.

Thanks for the info Phil. I think I'll probably buy the TXN25 and upgrade the ram. The 252 Euro (400 $) difference is not worth it.

Concern the upgrade, I found this thread on the forums, on the basis of which I'm going to buy the TXN25N:

Seems people had no problem upgrading the TX ram. What do you think?

It is a piece of cake, just one screw on the bottom and the ram slot opens up. I think there is only one socket though, fyi, so you'll have to buy a single 2gb stick.

Thanks for the tip! One question: has anyone managed to get the function keys/brightness controls to work after a downgrade to windows XP? I've been searching this forum ( very informative) and haven't been able to find an answer.

The TX originally shipped with XP, so you should be able to find all the correct drivers on sony's site.

Actually the models that he is interested in (TXN25 and TXN27..Core Solo 1.33 ghZ) they come with preloaded Vista Business as an OS. The previous models TX19 or TX17 come with XP.
