Hi all, apologies if this information is conveyed somewhere else on this board, I've had a good read over a lot of the big threads this morning but I'm still a little undecided.

I'm looking to buy one of the FW series in europe which means the FW11* or FW21* models.

I was almost dead set on the FW21e but then I realised it only has the single lamp display. The laptop's use will primarily be for software development (visual studio), heavy web browsing (for research) and some world of warcraft when time allows :) I would be very thankful if someone can answer the following:

    1) Are the dual lamp displays significantly better than the single lamp? Given that I will be staring a lot at code where clarity and sharpness of text will be important, do I need the dual lamp?

    2) Is there a general rule that governs what all the different model numbers mean? I.e. within the FW21 or FW11 bracket, what do the M/L/E/S/Z endings correspond to?

    3) Is there a single fundamental difference between the FW11 and FW21 series ? The sony site seems to refer to the FW11 as "multimedia" notebooks and the FW21 as "entertainment" notebooks, but thats not incredibly informative.

    4) Finally, some of the models only have a 4200 rpm hard disk drive instead of the more common 5400 rpm. Am I likely to see a massive performance hit from this? I've never seen a hard drive at that speed before.

Thank you very much for any help,

    Adam

i own a fw140E (codes are a bit different here) and here is my opinions:

    1. mine is single lamp (xbirte eco), and i am happy with it. the known problem of single lamp is: uneven backlight; which you can't notice it except when you are looking at a picture with monotonic color (all red for example). the top of the picture looks more saturated than the bottom. BUT when you play games, developing, watching movies, ... you won't notice it at all.

    2. i don't know exactly. maybe gpu plays a role here. mine is 4500mhd which is not good for playing (and i never play). its a good gpu for watching HD content because it soppurts dirext 10 and DxVA

    4. don't even think about 4200 rpm. the high end models of fw comes with 7200 rpm which is superfast. 5400 is also a good option.
