    I was just trying to copy files from a CD onto my FZ160 but it doesnt even recognize the CD/DVD drive. Nothing runs, no sound, and when I open explorer all I see is the Local Disk ( C: ), Memory Stick ( D: ), and SD/MMC ( E: ). Under that is other misc stuff. No CD/DVD drive shows in the explorer. I know it works because I created the Recovery Discs (2 DVDs). I dont know why I am having this problem and would really appreciate it if someone could help me.

    Thanks

    What do you mean what software does it use? I was just popping in a CD with my files and music on it, to copy to my laptop. The Explorer doesnt even show that there is a CD/DVD drive. Obviously it had it before since I created the recovery disks.

    Check the device manager... is there a yellow exclamation point next to the drive?

    Yes there is. In Device Manager, on the left of Sony DVD RW AW-G540A ATA Device is a yellow exclamation point. I right clicked and clicked "Update Driver Software and Windows says the software for this driver is up to date.

    What do I do?

    Go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    And delete "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" and then restart. (Do not delete if it ends in ".bak")

    Alternatively, reinstall pxengine from the Vaio Recovery Wizard.

    I have that exact directory open right now in the Registry. What exactly happens when I delete Upperfilters and Lowerfilters and restart my machine?

    Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing.

    I'd be really pissed if I had to do a registry hack just to get my brand new computer to recognize the optical drive. That is unacceptable.

    Thanks a lot. I looked into that last night but hesitated before taking action. Just now I got off the phone with Sony Support and they instructed me to do the same thing. I restarted my machine and see the DVD RW drive. Checking to make sure it works, I popped in a DVD and it recognizes it.

    Thanks again.

    No prob, vaio!

    To the other dude, you be really pissed because you would be ignorant of the fact that third-party music apps and burning programs cause this registry issue.

    Remember the issue if not with Sony or Microsoft. It is thirdy party software that is causing this issue.
