When you installed Mint, was it from a CD or DVD? If the drive flat out refuses to acknowledge CD-R/ROM disks, then it probably has corrupted firmware. If you're under warranty that's a free repair, and if you're not, a new drive is only about $20-$30 depending.

I see. Do you have a bootable cd-rom handy? Maybe an OS installation disk or a boot manager?

my laptop can automatically boot from CD-ROM. but if i want boot from usb , i have to change its setup manually by press F2.
about your 2nd question, yes it has 2 DVDs for recovery and not more.

i'll glad to know more what do u think the main reason of my problem. :)
of course, i think that's too soon i change my cd-rom. i have used it since 2008 and i really didn't use it so much.

thank u for your pay attention! i hope don't need to change it. :)

The lasers used for reading DVDs and CDs are different. You might simply have a speck of dust on the CD laser or the receptor.
Open the CD tray, and try giving it a good squirt or two from a gas duster from a safe distance; far enough away that it doesn't cause icing - test on your hand first.
Do not try to clean the lens manually, or you risk knocking it out of alignment, or damaging the lasers on each side.

Typical laptop optical drives are a lot more fragile than full-sized CD drives, because the whole laser head assembly comes out with the tray. This makes it more susceptible to dust and accidental touching, and because you have to press the CD down, if done at an angle, this can damage the drive.

^Really? I thought most modern drives had switched to dual-wavelength diodes.
