    Hello,

My Sony Vaio computer that I had for about 2 years now (so the warranty is expired) CPU is running over 85 degrees idle. Right now its running at 91 degrees. Same applies for all 4 cores (its Core i7 Q720) I cleaned the fans, and yet it still runs very hot. I experience major performance decreases and crashes even when performing the most basic tasks (such as browsing the web or having a screen saver on). This computer has always been very fast and I never had problems with it before except for a few months ago. I never expected CPU to have problems but turns out it does. I ordered a faster HD to help the problem too (not that its going to fix overheat, but still, I wanted to get it for a long time anyway.

    Thanks

If you have already cleaned your fan AND heatsink and while doing trivial tasks (have you checked Task Manager?) your CPU overheats/throttles back then its probably time to reapply thermal paste as it may have dried out and lost its effectiveness...

I am currently having the exact same issue as the thread owner. Same model and processor. I have cleaned my fan and my heatsink (cleaned the fan from the top cage, and the bottom even) I saw a few degrees of improvement, but generally still way hotter than other Fseries owners.

Do you know of any step-by-step guides to reapplying the thermal paste? I can get into the machine no problems now, but I am kinda lost when it comes to removing the heatsync.

when you reapply paste make sure you tighten it as much as you can without stripping. It sounds as if its junk paste and they didn't tighten the heatsink. If your heatsink does not have good pressure on CPU it will make a night and day difference. I am putting my money it is a tightening issue. Let me know how that works. Also take pictures of your laptop and post it here I am interested to see what the set up is and if repasting and tightening helps. You could trying tightening right now. I assume it wont help much since the paste is dry but would be interesting. If it feels loose and you can tighten it right now than that is 100% your problem. Allso what is your exact make and model and specs?
