    Hi :)

Got a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21 laptop which has a Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2 GHz processor installed, is it possible to upgrade this? And what would you recommend to upgrade to? I don’t want to put a quicker chip in then for the HS/F not able to cope with the extra heat so would love somebody who has done this to share their experiences :D

The one I’m looking at is an Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.40GHz, I’m also wondering is the laptop would accept a newer Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz CPU.

    Thanks.

It will work. You might want to check out a manual or guide or two.

    Thanks :)

    (CPU model/Clockspeed/L2Cache/FSB)

Possible CPU's assuming you have the listed chipsets.

Ah that’s a great chart! I have the PM965 533/800 chipset so any of those looks okay, just concerned about heat, I presume the Penryn chips should be cooler would you guys reckon the HS/F could handle the 2.5GHz Penryn CPU?

Yes since Penryns run on the 45nm process meaning they are cooler. Your current processor have the same TDP as penryns (Thermal design power)

Be aware that you wont see much of a difference in performance when upgrading the CPU. Your cpu now is more than enough to run every day tasks. Only CPU intensive tasks will benefit from the extra clockspeed.

Upgrading your RAM will yield better results

If you still wish to upgrade, the T8300 would be the best value for money.

I'd say with a penryn and some artic silver 5 temps should be conciderably lower  Unless they're already low :D

    Thanks for that :)

I’ve just upgraded to 4GB :D I would of presumed there would be a noticeable difference, there is 500MHz and 4MB extra over the T7250, you mention the T8300 I’ve just looked and the difference between this and the T9300 is £35, I don’t know which to choose..

Hehe I’ve got plenty of AS5 here :p The temps are cool with the T7250 (53c max, 37c Idle) so if the penryn CPU is cooler it’s a big bonus! :)

My T7250 is 45 idle and maxes out at 72 during games so i think your fine ;)

What do you need the faster processor for if you don't mind me asking?
A bigger, faster harddrive would show a more noticable improvement with general use.

Well I’m starting to do a lot of HD encoding and playback, just recently sold my PC to move to my laptop which had a E8400 @ 4.0GHz I can defiantly tell the difference between the T7250 so a quicker CPU is needed, I’m currently looking at a quicker HDD, would you recommend any?

The WD and hitachi 320gb 7200rpm are monsters but a 320 5200rpm would be a little more cost efficiant :) I believe the penryn processors have the sse4 instruction set that helps with video encoding? Wise choice :)

In that case a faster CPU will definately benefit you. The encoding time difference between the T8300, T9300 & T9500 are in seconds. So the T8300 would still be the best value for money. As for a HDD, if you have the money, go for the new 320GB 7200RPM

For regular everyday use a T7250 is sufficient enough, the price of a T9300 wouldnt have justified the performance you get.

    Hello,

My HP notebook has a T5250 1.5ghz (pretty bad huh) does that mean I can only upgrade to any CPU on the Merom-2M, like up to the T7250? or is it the entire list.

If it helps, here is the link to the actual notebook i have:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834147534

I have a feeling my computer is being hindered by a slow processor...because I trust my GPU is good enough already.

And is there a tutorial on going about the upgrade process?

Please create your own thread in the HP section

Yes you can upgrade to anything within that list assuming you have the chipsets listed.

Yes there is a video tutorial and a service manual. I can give you these resources when you create your own thread in the HP section

The T9300 2.53 Ghz. is definitely worth the upgrade. It is reasonably priced and is compatible.
The FZ series notebooks tend to overheat. Since this processor runs much cooler, it will definitely help. You will notice a difference in both speed and temperature! ;)
If you decide to upgrade to this processor yourself, you may want to look at this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209268
It is an accurate/informative tutorial on how to unscrew your FZ series notebook. I hope this helps! :)

This is a great thread as i am currently thinking of putting a new CPU in my AR51J Vaio. I have already upgraded the RAM to 4GB and i am using this as a desktop replacement and i'm not to fussed about paying an extra $250 for a CPU upgrade

    I have an Intel C2D T7250 Merom Socket P (478)

Looking at the graph on the other page, would i be able to upgrade to a T9500 or would i have to stay with a Merom and possibly go for the T7800, as i am not sure what the limit of my upgrade options are with the mainboard which is a PM965.

Any advice would be appreciated as i want to be sure which is the best CPU i can safely buy which will work and not overheat.

    Cheers

You can put a penryn in there, depending on what you use your laptop for i think a T8300 would be the best price\performance processor to upgrade to.
