I am nearly thinking about buying this (any thoughts on this actual laptop by the way, is this the latest model?)
Sony Vaio Z BLACK Core i5 3.06Ghz 1GB nVidia 256GB SSD - eBay, Laptops, Notebooks, Computers. (end time 25-Oct-10 13:05:01 AEDST)

Been around the houses looking for a laptop, one laptop that will serve me for everything, it is my main computer. Currently..I have some old thinkpads and a netbook! and am using the netbook 90% of time since it is so small and light and usable.

So, I would love to have a 650Gb drive..and all my Pics, music in one place, but I guess I need a usb drive for that, and need to learn to love SSD and the speed improvement.

When viewing pictures, on a normal drive, picassa has a lag when loading pictures, irritating, I assume SSDs will have no such lag...

    Question:

Should I be worried about the i5/i7 INTEL CPU whine. I get this on my core 2 duo thinkpad...and was surprised to read even the new intels have it. It relates to the laptop on battery and voltage modes changing. I can hear it quite distinctly and it spoils my current thinkpad.

I am not sure, but assume ALL laptops be it ibm/asus/sony etc have the cpu whine if they use intel.

I think there are various types of whines, I've heard LCD power-or-something, and CPU. They all seem to be due to some reasonance effect of the onboard circuitry, and depending on the laptop model, the probability of landing a whiny one may be higher.

For the Z, I've heard only of one person who had it, which suggests Sony has put some thought into eliminating such issues. So, the likelihood that you'll get it seems quite low.

Of the thousands of posts i've read in the Z owner's thread i dont ever remembering anyone reporting this problem you're afraid of, and on forums like these, there's usually a higher percentage of people here with problems on their laptops as compared with the outside world

actually, i currently have a Sony Vaio-Z12 and i'm having the described problem, it started about a month after my purchase and there is a distinct and audible whine/whirling sound near the left heating vents. this sound is constant and never stops. when i first bought the vaio there was absolutely no fan noise when in idle or running basic tasks. this must mean some sort of small hardware issue has occured......
