    Hey folks,

So I just upgraded my CR220E with 4 Gb of RAM, and a 7200 RPM HDD. I Also installed Win 7 PRO (32 bit) onto the new HDD.

I was installing all the relevant files I could find from Sony's eSupport Site.

I wanted to minimize the Bloatware that came with the notebook originally. When it had VISTA and all the original Sony Software, it was unbelievably slow @ start up, and it always seemed like the HDD light never turned off <.<

Anyways, I installed the SFEP (the original sony firmware parser, plus the 2 updates up to 8.0.1.2).

I tried to install the Shared Library but I encountered an oddity. After the first install, it would say - "might not have installed properly..etc..install under recommended settings", but after I do - it gives windows popup msg saying "Its for Vista."

Anyways, I went about installing the 3 Settings/Utility files. Got the camera working.

Can you folks think of any other "necessary" files from the sony site?

p.s. How important is the Shared Library? This post implies there's a necessary order to installation - how true is that? Because if I think about it, if the Shared Library "recommended reinstallation" didn't work out - then didn't I just mess up the installation procedure? Is there really an installation order?

I have zero items with exclamation points in device manager, and everything seems to perform admirably..

Sony Shared Library is important specially for the Fn Keys to work..

for the function keys to work these should be installed and in order..

    Setting Utility Series
    Sony Shared Library
    Vaio Event Service
    Vaio Control Center
    Vaio Power Management

I have tried upgrading a VGN-CR35G to Windows 7 by using the drivers from Vista, but of course some drivers were not installed because they are locked on Vista OS like the ATI Graphics, Audio Realtek and others but you can download one from their official website.

I have a few followup questions if you don't mind.

    1) how important is that order because I'm mixed messages from different posts. this post stated something different from what you suggested.

I personally installed the parser, TRIED to install the library, then I installed the utilities, and finally the event service.

The library install stated it might not have installed properly, will need to install under recommended settings. After I do install under recommended settings, it explicitly stops the install saying it was meant for vista.

    2) As it sits right now, I don't have the library installed, and the unit works just fine - function keys and all.

    3) Is there a specific .dll or file I can look for in the system to indicate that the SHared Library has been installed?

the install order was based on my experience...

if it is working and all then i think its ok... you can check sony shared library on this path..

    C:\program files\common file\sony shared\

if you have that folder then i believe sony shared library has been installed.

try the drivers and application for VGN-CR3 they may work on VGN-CR2... but not the ones I mentioned (Grpahics/Audio, and a couple more..)

Ty for the replies, they were truly helpful.
Gonna reinstall 7 now and do it as close as possible to the order. Its actually quite similar to this article I found on Sony's site on the Clean Install Procedure.

I was just concerned that maybe the library was some critical security issue, as with the even viewer etc. But aside from communication between the Win7Pro OS and the hardware.. none of the items would compromise security if they weren't included right?

I mean as long as the Flash Player, the AV/antispyware, firewall were up, excluding some of these files wouldnt' matter in terms of my VGN-CR220E's security?

yes security will not be compromised if you missed other files as long as you already have the firewall/av/spysweeper etc...
