The Arrandales (Core i3/i5) are coming out in less than a week. I think Intel began shipping the chips to vendors before the holiday, so it's possible that companies have begun to clear stock of C2D, which even though they're good chips, they're just starting to get old. I'm not entirely sure because I don't work for the tech industry, but it seems logical.

Like ad2013 said, they're probably going to refresh the CW and several other models in January to the new i-series processors. Kinda like Apple and the iPhone, they sell completely out of stock before coming to market with a new model.
