Hello fellow Sony fans. I'm hoping that someone here owns or has owned a PCG-F series PIII notebook computer and can help me. I have a PCG-F580K running Win2k and Ubuntu in a dual-boot config. It runs great for most things I need it for but could use a little more memory. According to Sony, I am maxed out at 256MB but I believe it could take more. The PCG-F580K uses the 440BX chipset, which accepts 256MB modules, but only certain low density types. These should theoretically be the same ones used by Thinkpads of the same vintage. I will point you to http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=67488 for reference. Can anyone confirm or deny the ability of my Sony to use 324 or even 512MB of RAM? Thanks so much.

    Chris

You can use 100 or 133 Mhz SODIMM SDRAM just make sure you dont mix the bus speeds. Whether you can add more than 256 Mb and still show up in the system may be a hit and miss situation....

We will soon find out. I bought a KINGSTON KTM-TP390X/256 256MB module and it should be here before the weekend.

Well, it looks like Sony has lied to us. The KTM-TP390X/256 module works! I now have 384MB of RAM. I may try a second module later but this is enough for Ubuntu to do anything you'd want to do with this processor.
