    I haven't popped the lid off my precious SZ yet, but I'm assuming it's a BGA (ball-grid array) CPU package and not a uPGA (micro pin-grid array). The "ball" in BGA refers to the solder balls soldering the part to the board... so unless you have the specialized equipment needed for removing, reballing, and resoldering BGA parts, it's permanently on the board. A uPGA part has pins that go in a socket, and you can switch those out.

    Because the socket adds height (and weight!) it's a good bet that the SZ uses a BGA. My previous VAIO, a PCG-Z1WA, used a BGA and it had tons of room in the case compared to the SZ.

    The CPU is socketed. If you remove the access cover nearest the battery you can see for yourself.
