    I am considering purchase a Sony VAIO TZ notebook (VGN-TZ150N/B, U7500 1.06GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD).

Anyone know if I could purchase another 1GB stick and install it myself? If so, would this void the warranty and which model of RAM should I shop for?

Also, Can I replace the OEM 100GB with something bigger? preferbly a 120GB (one in Dell D430) or a 160GB?

    Many thanks in advance~

You should be able to replace both the RAM and the HDD. You may want to ask Sony if it will void your warranty, but it shouldn't. Keep in mind, of course, that the individual parts you upgrade won't be covered by your warranty.

It only has one ram slot total, so you'd have to get a 2gb stick for it to upgrade the ram.

thank you for the quick response. so unlike Dell D430 which has 1GB memory integrated to the motherboard, VAIO TZ come with 1GB RAM stick installed to the only one DIMM slot?

which 2GB memory stick should I purchase and how much do I look into spending on the memory?

This has no ram integrated into the motherboard, just one ram slot total.

Why not just get a D430 if you want something that small? Beside its cheaper.

    The TZ is $2K right?

Replacing the hard drive voids your warranty.

Really? I never heard of this before. I think not with Dell. Sony is like that?

Pretty much any notebook that doesn't have a door or another easily accessible way to reach the hard drive will need to be serviced by an authorized technician if you don't want to void your warranty. The Macbook Pro is that way, and so is the Sony TZ and SZ.

Well, that really depends on the reseller more than it does the location of the hard drive. Several notebooks that we support don't have any quick and easy access to the hard drive or memory. You have to remove the keyboard to access anything. Our resellers and OEMs still let us walk the customers through the process, though. The real problem is that big names like Apple, Sony, and HP want to control the systems completely, so they restrict upgrades and put "warranty void if broken" stickers all over the notebook.

The Apple Macbook hard drive is easily upgradable, and it does not void the warranty. I agree that the big companies want too much control though. Look at the iPhone.

200 pin DDR2 PC 4200 so the FSB is 533Mhz. Unfortunately, there is only one DIMM slot total on the MB
