It's probably a stupid question, but I don't know much about audio.
i know i can only get 2.1 from the headphone jack, and 5.1 via a expresscard or usb device like the external soundblaster's,
but is it possible to just get 5.1 if I have a monitor or device which takes hdmi and then has 5.1 audio out support from the hdmi stream? (my current monitor does not)...

Well, that goes to ask as well, if the nvidia high definition audio in the Z1 is 5.1 capable.?

Because it works. The caveat is I don't know of a recent monitor that supports 5.1 OUT unless it's specifically coming from the internal atsc tuner.

Your best bet is to get an hdmi equipped receiver. Go vaio to receiver to monitor/tv.

I believe my Dell 3008WFP supports 5.1 out via HDMI. It's not a recent monitor though. Does the latest 30-inch Dell not support 5.1?

Actually, you CAN get 5.1 from your headphone jack output. Dolby Pro Logic surround mode encodes 5.1 into a 2-channel analog source and then it's decoded back to 5.1 channels. Almost all movies are encoded with Dolby Pro Logic. This is how we got 5.1 channel surround sound in the VCR, Laserdisc, and the beginning of DVD days. Almost all (99%) of current surround sound receivers are able to decode Dolby Pro Logic.

Then came Dolby Digital, DTS, and their variants. These require a digital signal path, such as optical, coaxial, or HDMI. This uses 5.1 discrete channels rather than encoding onto 2-channels. Again, your receiver has to be able to decode this signal. And most surround sound receivers are able of decoding this as well.

I have the Z2 laptop and I hook-up the HDMI output to my home receiver's HDMI input. And I do get full surround sound from movies. I am confident the Z1 is also fully capable of passing surround sound info.

My own monitor is not the latest 30" Dell monitor, it's a previous generation. Hence I don't know if the latest one supports 5.1 also or not, because I don't have it.

How about some reading comprehension skills? kthxbye
