Hi there, I'm a new member and this is my first post. I need a laptop that will last me until the Spring of 2008, since my law school will only up the cost of attendance once in three years to account for a computer purchase and reasonable accessories.
Today I ordered a Sony FS series 690. You can see the specs by clicking on this. When you look under graphics card, one of the options is a "915gm Chipset Integrated Option". Since it says this, am I correct in assuming that they use the 915gm Express chipset?? Given that they use the 770/760/750/etc. series of chips, I'd guess they do.
Here's a link to the 915GM's stats on Intel's site. Note that it supports a 533mhz FSB, which is what the CPUs I mentioned before operate at. I think (hope [}]) I'm pretty safe in assuming that's the chipset used. If you look at the stats on Intel's site, it shows that the 915gm chipset supports DDR2 533 ram. If you click on "chipset feature comparison chart" it shows the 915gm supporting up to 2 gig of 400 or 533 ddr2 ram.
Sooo.... here are my main questions:
(1) Am I correct in assuming they use the 915gm chipset?
(2) If this is the case, then it should accept 2 one gig sticks of ddr2 533, right? I mean, there's no way Sony would "dumb down" a higher end chipset like this, would they?
(3) If it looks like I am good to go, I think I would go with two sticks of this. Would this be a poor choice? I've had good experiences with Kingston in desktops, but I am completely new to the notebook game. If it's a solid choice,it would actually be cheaper to just max it out at 2 gigs of the fastest RAM supported than to get one gig from Sony of only PC2700/DDR333. Plus, it looks like the Kingston stuff will be back in stock again at newegg tomorrow.
In any case, I've learned a decent amount lurking here. Enough to feel at least somewhat informed when making my purchase. Any help is certainly appreciated.
Thanks,
Everyman

DDR and DDR2 are not compatible. they are physically different + require different voltages.
The 915 chipset series has the option to be equiped with either single channel DDR, or single/dual channel DDR2 (if you have 1 or 2 modules respectively). So you're stuck with a max support of DDR333 in single channel on that model.
Sony have really been disappointing in the past few years!
