Has anyone been able to get a TZ to run a 1920x1080 external monitor.

It should run fine. Just don't expect it to playback 1080p/1080i/high bitrate 720p at FHD resolution. It will choke. The GMA950 is just not made for HD video, but desktop wise, it'll surf the internet, and other basic things fine.

Great. Now the question is how. I've downloaded the latest Intel graphics update but with the 1920x1080 monitor connected the display settings don't offer the 1920x1080 resolution option.

I used to have TZ long time ago.

With stock drivers only, it cannot display 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 as the maximum resoluion in VBIOS is 1600xsomething...

I used tool called "PowerStrip" which allows you to create custom resolutions and force the graphic hardware to output them. I found a desktop GMA950 system which has 1920x1xxx support, and copied the display timings (just install PowerStrip on it, too) and then used them for my custom resolution on TZ.

Just make sure that the desktop GMA950 reference system also outputs the picture via VGA output.

It worked flawlessly - that was during Windows Vista days, but I am sure it should work on Win 7 as well.

Not always, but sometimes. When it works well, it's virtually indistinguishable from a digital connection.
