My screen randomly got messed up looking so I restarted, but after several restarts it's still screwed up. Even in safe mode it looks like this.

Is it dead? The timing is really bad and I don't know what to do about it.

What graphics card do you have as there if a few that regularly fail, example nvidia 8400m , 8600m and a couple more.

Is the bios screen messed up as well?

do you have a vga cable because if you when you plug it in to a external monitor/tv and it is still garbled it means you lcd is ok.

Have you got an external monitor to plug into? If it's fine there then either the Screen or LCD cable is messed up, if it's just as fuzzy on the external monitor then the graphics card unfortunately had its day. Get warranty support if it still has one otherwise it's usually cheaper just to get a replacement unit rather paying for a new motherboard.

Thanks for the info. The notebook is a few years old, it's a FZ290 and does in fact have an 8400M graphics card. I tried it again when I woke up and it looks fine for now, though I am expecting this to be an ongoing problem. The next time it happens I will plug it into my TV via HDMI and see how it looks there.

I found a place not too far from me that will replace the motherboard same day for $140, so looks like crisis averted. I was expecting much worse, both in cost and the time it would take to get it repaired.
