I need more space, can the Z11's SD card reader use 64GB SDXC memory?

can't see why not, just don't use it as a drive, won't last long

If you can read japanese. The Q&A there is stating that the VPC - Z's as well as many other newer sony laptops are supporting SDXC.

I dont think that it will wear out fast, because also SD cards have wear leveling. The only downside of using the SD card reader as additional storage space is, that the integrated reader is not the fastest interface. I am getting roughly 6-7 MB/s with class 10 cards, on other noname USB readers I get more than 15 MB/s with the same card. In my opinion, better invest the money in a drive caddy and a fast HDD or SSD than being stuck at 6 MB/s!

I did plan on using it as a drive to store my data (probably songs and videos). Why would it not last long?

Hmmm 6-7 MB does sound a bit slow. Might have to try it and see.

I should probably get a link to prove it.
But I was read that the new Z13 refresh now includes a sdxc card reader. Which would imply that the z11 and z12 previously didn't have support for those cards.

Can anyone verify if in fact the Z11 will support a 64gb SDXC card? I would like to get one mainly for storage of photos, power point programs and documents. Is Class 4 okay or should I pay more for a faster card?

I would second "your mother's" response that the Z13 was introduced with SDXC support which implies that the older variants only support up to SDHC.

I hope someone can give you a definitive answer, but I would say for now, don't buy any card!

Would 32GB suffice? I only ask because that's the biggest SDHC card there is.
Another option would be a 32GB Memory Stick Pro Duo card +32GB SDHC if you want 64GB of extra space.
Another option is getting a Memory Stick to micro SDHC adapter X2 as seen on Amazon: Amazon.com: TOPRAM 32GB (16GB x 2) microSD microSDHC Card Class 4 with Memory Stick Pro Duo Adapter: Electronics
Another other option is getting an SDXC card reader for the express card slot to expand with a 64GB card that way.
Another option is to get an express card SSD. The biggest I've seen is 96GB.

I don't have SDXC but 32gb SDHC works fine... But it's for transferring photos off camera. BTW, I'm getting 10mb/s-17mb/s sequential write speed, read is about 19-20 mb/s and I don't have a single class 10 SDHC. I'm pretty sure 13 does support SDXC, and it's possible that previous 11/12 do too but it wasn't as relevant for them as it is now so Sony might have just announced support for SDXC with 13 as a marketing gimmick. I'm sure, however, that the reader in Z's does not support full SDXC speed so it's gonna be limited to around 20mb/s

However, as a second drive it's gonna be impractical, the random write/read is atrocious

A forum member with a VPC-Z1 tried a 32GB SDXC card and couldn't get it to work. May be you could PM them for a follow-up?

It appears that sdxc support was added with the Z3.

    Edited to add:
I've just sent them a PM.

Rachel, I downloaded a Ricoh SD/MMC device driver from Ricoh's site and refreshed at my vpcz11. I'm sorry but I cannot provide you with the reference leading exactly to the download (I don't remember it) but it seems that it was somewhere here Flash Memory Card Controller LSI R5C833 / Electronic Devices | Ricoh Global

I couldn't find the driver at Richoh's site.

I bought a 64GB class 10 SDXC card yesterday and it works in the Z138GG. I will test it in the Z117GG when I get it back later today.

I am curious if it will work. I mean, all Z's may use the same Ricoh card reader chipset:

    Z11's chipset: Ricoh R5U231

    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E822&SUBSYS_905A104D&REV_00

As far as I could see on the Ricoh page, there was only
    R5U231
    R5U230
    R5U241

    see here

No chip was mentioned to have SDXC support.

    Hi guys,
I tried my 64GB SDXC card in my Z117GG and it works.
I didn't update the drivers for the card reader.

Great! Just to make sure, they have the same chip - can you check the Hardware ID of the Z13's Ricoh SD controller in device manager? Should be

    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E822&SUBSYS_905A104D&REV_00

    just like the Z11...

    Hi,
I just checked and it's identical in both the Z117GG and Z138GG.
