This is probably a crazy question; and a shot in the dark. But a small backdrop on where I'm coming from might help:

4 years ago I bought an Alienware M17x. After all options & configuration, my order total was over $4,000. I just happen to stumble on a beautiful thread right here @ notebook review in the Alienware forums about haggling with Dell reps on the phone for a better price. Long story short, I paid $2,700 for a bundle that was reflecting at $4,000+ in the cart at dell.com.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Sony Vaio Duo 13. The price after customization is at $1,7699 @ Sony Store. I'm not expecting miracles, but is there any scope of haggling (or any other way) to get a better price/discount on the order? Or is Dell a unique scenario? I've never ordered from Sony Store so I have no idea. The combination I'm looking for isn't available at other retailers and the price is about $250 more then what I really wanted to spend.

Just thought I'd ask (ref: Alienware incident).

    Thanks!

Back when I ordered my Z1 in 2010 I haggled over the phone and got I think 30-40% off. Keep in mind though that if you get a warranty it'll lessen how many repairs charges you can get since the ADH is based on the price you paid for your laptop.

    Jon,

Thanks for your response; this is tremendously helpful! I know the haggling factor exists due to some pre-existing parameters, like whether or not sales rep gets a commission on the sale. It's difficult to know whether or not There is a point to haggling unless someone can vouch for it. Your past experience is of tremendous value. Now I know I stand a chance; and will take that chance.

Technically I just need a 15% discount to bring it down to the $1,500 figure that I'm more comfortable with. Anything more would only be a plus.

With Alienware, I had added my customized order to the cart & then called them - they were able to pull up my order via my account & we went from there. Do you by any chance recall how you went about? Did you involve the online cart at all or initiated a fresh phone order?

Either way, thanks again for the response; I'll post my outcome & experience here.

I just picked up the i7 store configuration. Saw it in person and was sold nit not ready too buy . It's amazing so far. Talking to the salesman explaining I usually wait for sales or no tax he said he can do a 10% off discount and look the other way. That's when I said I'll take it. Your mileage may vary of course. Awesome awesome machine. I've been through god knows how many laptops last two years or so and finally found one I love. Go for it!

Wow - that is definitely very promising & exciting! I'm definitely in for one. I'm also getting the i7-4650u with 8gb ram & 128gb ssd. I plan to add 64gb (or 128gb if supported) via memory stick.

My wife is waiting for me to the 13, if she likes it, she plans on getting the 11.

Did you get it from Sony Store? Did you call the usual US store # listed on their website?

Thanks - I really appreciate it! This is extremely helpful.

I got the 13in. I went to the Sony store itself. I also would have preferred the 12 8gb plus 8gb ram model but at the store only the loaded modem has the 8gb ram so in went for it.

Hi Audiofx81 - did you get the Duo 13 or the Pro 13? I ask because I called the NYC Sony Store (on Madison Ave) and they said they won't have the Duo 13s in until next month. If you did find a Duo 13 in the flesh, can you tell me which store it was at? Thanks.
