I am an owner of a VAIO VGN-AR320E laptop and I just recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Professional. I went to Sony's website and downloaded/installed all of the necessary drivers for the laptop. Everything works except certain buttons on the laptop (eject CD, audio/video buttons).

Those buttons i'm not concerned about cuz i can eject a CD from 'My Computer'. The problems I AM having are with the CD drive itself. I can play music/movies & I can install from a CD, but whenever I go to burn a CD (be it with windows burner or a 3rd party app, even iTunes), I get a message from windows saying that I need to update my CD drive drivers after the burning process seems to have completed. iTunes gives me an error message.

This is all after i have re-installed the drivers from Sony. The drive itself is listed as a Mata DVD RAM UJ-850S. I have completed instruction online of deleting the Upper & LowerFilters in the registry and have Windows reinstall recommened drivers, but it still will do everything BUT burn a CD.

My next option is to buy an external CD/DVD burner for $50-60 but I want to make sure I've exhausted all available options before doing so.

    Any ideas?

Also, if i do buy an external burner, will I experience the same problems? I wouldnt think so if its Windows 7 capatible, right?

    Thanks in advance!

If it was me, I would uninstall ANYTHING related to burning, particularly Easy Cd Creator (if you have it). Restart, then run a registry cleaner (try Ccleaner and make a backup of changes, it will prompt you for it).

Then install Imgburn, a very small and simple burning program, and see how that works. If that fails, it should give you some info as to why.

If your problem is software related (which is possible), then chances are you will have the same problem with an external burner. If it's hardware then it would fix the problem.
