I updated my SVS151290x to a SSD and Windows 8.1. The Firmware Extension Parser for 8.1 will not install. I just get a window that shows extracting progress, then nothing more happens. The Windows 8 FEP seemed to install and got rid of one unknown device in my device manager, but there is still another which I suspect may go away if I can figure out how to get the 8.1 FEP to install. BTW, I don't have the VAIO Updater installed. I'm just getting the files directly from Sony's support site.

    Windows 8.1 (not Pro)

    Hello,

    same problem here,
the unknown devices happen to control the sd card port of my computer apparently because it won't recognize my sd card anymore. And do you know why I need to access the innards of that SD card ?

Because a few hours ago, it was the usb ports which were "unknown devices" - much worse ! I did a full restore of Windows 8.1 because I couldn't wait for a Sony fix to get my usb (3.0) ports working, and now the usb are back (phew !), but the sd card port won't work. Problem is, since I didn't have my usb ports and I am on a Vaio Flip without a optical drive (my external drive... plugs through usb !), I backed up my data on my sd card, the only kind of storage which could connect to my computer at the time. And now all my important data is on a tiny sd nanocard (encased in a bigger sd adapter, for certes) which my computer can't read.

The experience of restoring Windows 8.1 without a usb or dvd reader and after having upgraded from Windows 8.0 directly from the Windows Store was so harrowing that I installed Ubuntu for the first time immediately after reclaiming control of my usb ports, but still, I think it would be very much to the point to try and solve this Windows 8.1 Sony Driver problem if I need to use Windows anytime in the future.

    So plz help.
To get back to the subject, I tried to do the update both from Vaio Care and directly from Sony website for France, and both times - running as administrator and multiple times I should mention - the Sony packaging manager loads... and nothing happens. It is still shown running in the Task Manager indefinitely, 2 separate tasks named Sony Firmware Extension Parser and Sony Packaging Manager using respectively using about 2 MB and 1 MB of memory, which cumulate each time I run the driver installation .exe (I have 5 of both running in the Task Manager as I write).
If started from Vaio Care, the progress bar acts normal during the download and then goes on indefinitely during "installing" without installing (I left it for hours).

This is a pretty big issue so I would appreciate some feedback.

    Yours truly,
    S.
