I have the new Win7 disks from MSDN (pro and ultimate). Tried multiple times yesterday to upgrade my Z690 from Vista. Uninstalled all of the conflicting drivers/programs, it goes all the way through the install process, gets to the point where it copies over the old files, but then abruptly restarts and uses the Rollback program to get me into Vista again.

I tried 4 times, same result each time. Anyone have an idea if there's something I can do get this machine upgraded?

A clean install is not an option, too many programs I can't find the disks to...

What are people's experiences with upgrading to Windows 7 with a Sony Z? Good? Painful? I see a lot of pain posts like the one above but I suppose that's to be expected -- we post only when we have problems.

I'm considering upgrading my main machine from Vista to 7, but am weary of incompatible apps. For example, does the fingerprint scan still work?

Anyway would love to hear about people's experiences.

I would say wait until it is released to the public in October and I am sure Sony will post up new drivers to solve any nagging issues.

Just upgraded today to the public Release Candidate, So far, I've had absolutely no issues. Did a fresh install, and it updated most everything with no issues. I have the Sprint WWAN card, but no service, so I haven't tested that. Also, I don't use the fingerprint reader, so I haven't played with that either. So far it seems that Win 7 runs much better than Vista on my machine - Z520, 3GB.

Thanks -- I think I'm going to go for it. I am an MSDN subscriber so am upgrading to Windows 7 RTM.

I have RC installed on my desktop and it is AWESOME.

I did a clean install on a Z590 to W7 x86. And it worked (havent tested the WWAN) all hardware seems to work with the Vista drivers except the Fingerprint. I downloaded the Fingerprint driver directly from upek.com (W7 version) and it worked.
W7x64 wont even boot on my PC (The DVD is ok) ...very surprising I wanted to try the x64 finally. Any ideas?
Sony is really ticking me off not suppling offical x64 drivers/support for the 590.

OK -- did it. Here's my quick report...

Overall the upgrade went smoothly. It took a HECKUVA long time, especially compared to a clean install, but I didn't need to hunt down drivers. Most everything seems to work, including the fingerprint scan.

There are two big cons however...

    - I'm really disappointed by how sluggish the Vaio Z feels. Perhaps even more so than Vista and definitely slower than my Windows 7 desktop, which my Vaio Z should smoke spec wise. The difference I think is an upgrade vs. clean install

    - The HDMI sound doesn't work. Something's changed with the way HDMI works. Previously, in Vista, when I connect to my LCD TV via HDMI, video and audio are automatically outputted to the TV. Now, the video outputs to the TV, but not the audio. When you go to the Sound panel, it says the HDMI output works but the cable is not plugged in. It's obviously plugged in, so this seems like a bug. Anyone come across this? With a fix? Right now this is a big blow to me as I watch Blu-Ray movies with my Z

But it's almost worth it for one reason...HOMEGROUP!

Talk about a killer app for the consumer market. It's basically like having a server in your house. My desktop and backup laptop now stream movies and music from my Z. Awesome.

Now if we can only get the HDMI connection working properly...

Can't comment on the upgrade as I did a clean install. It took less than 30min to be inside windows and it managed to find most drivers.

Homegroup was one of the first things I turned off and disabled :p
I like to manage my network my way :)

Has anyone successfully upgraded an SSD-based Z series? I have a RAID-SSD on my Sony (total of 256GB), not sure if the drivers exist...
