Hi Everyone
I am in a terrible muddle over here. About a week ago
I was having some slight performance issues with one of my favourite games,
well its a brand new game, so naturally after some tweaking in the in game video options,
I got it running smoothly, then whilst playing my game,
I thought of maybe updating my ATI Mobility Radeon hd 3470 graphics driver,
and to my amazement there was one, so I just let it do its thing, and that was that.
Then I saw to my shock it updated to a 3400 series?? I don't know why it went from a 3470 to a 3400series.Anyway when I went back into my game, I saw that the performance issues had worsened, but even more much worse than what they were in the first place, so after messing about with the in game video options again (with no joy) I remembered the catalyst control centre, I don't really know much about it, but I knoiw its a part of my display driver, and I felt maybe I could tweak something in there that may fix the performance issue, but it just said it had stopped working. Even when I have installed the ccc installer manager, I see it installing, so I know its on my system, but I can't locate it, weird??
So now just over a week on as I type this, I have experienced the bsod about 5 times, and everytime the blue screen viewer always says the same thing about an ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver being the cause of the shutdown.
It was the update that has caused this problem, and now I am getting really worried, as my last computer died because of a bsod problem.
please help
p.s.sorry for the long post

Rickie, AMD drivers are very fickle at the best of times.
There is a process for installing them that will avoid BSOD. Since I'm typing from my phone I can't write you myself. But if you google "AMD Clean Install Guide" you will find very detailed guides specifically designed to avoid your situation (you're definitely not alone).
Alternatively if you aren't comfortable learning the procedure you could always do a 'Windows System Restore' to the point before you installed the new drivers.
Hope that's helps. Post back if you need more help or run into trouble. You can always PM me if need be too. -
I did try the system restore, but there was no restore points,so after alittle surfing on the net, I came across one forum that said it was their crap cleaner that was preventing the system restore from showing restore points, and operating as normal so I uninstalled the crap cleaner off my system, and hey presto, my system restore was showing restore points, but there was only three, but when I finally did a system restore, I was prompted that the system restore was incomplete, so that is another issue I need to resolve also, ughrr, lol.
But yeh thanks again for your input. -
ok I did exactly as what the AMD Clean Install Guide said, being to switch off firewall/anti-virus ect, and downloaded Catalyst Software Suite, when the installation was complete, I got this error..
HDMI Audio Driver
Final Status: Fail
Version of Item: 6.58.0.6614
Size: 1 Mbytes
btw, I have wondered about the Catalyst Software Suite, once it doe's succesfully install, what then? what I mean is, where can it be located, as for it to be run & viewed, like the way I could see it on my desktop for tweaking the graphics ect.
thanks -
Hey Richie, sorry to hear you havent fixed things yet. Now that I have the power of a keyboard, ill quickly make sure you did the clean install like as follows. You will need Driver Sweeper and CCleaner, both are free programs
1) RIght click My Computer, go Properties, then Device Manager.
2) Select Display Adapters, then right click your GPU and go Properties, then click the Driver tab and Update Driver, then "Browse from my Computer", then "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
3) Then Select a Standard VGA Driver, click next and install it.
4) Now, boot into Windows safe mode (pressing F8 as the computer is booting)
5) Once you're into Safe mode, run Driver Sweeper and clean the AMD Drivers, then reboot into Windows.
6) Once in Windows use CCleaner and Scan Registry, then press fix. You may need to do this a few times in a row.
7) Finally you are ready to install your AMD Drivers. Go ahead and do it.
You may want to choose customer installation so you can choose yourself where you would like the folder to go.
Unfortunately, its important you do every step here to avoid getting you BSOD's.
See how you go, ill check back here -
hey am sorry for not getting back sooner, I got alittle sidetracked, and couldn't really get back on my laptop, but now am back, am gonna do what you say, and will let you know how I got on.
-
hey I did exactly step by step what you said, though I got an error when I did the installation being the world of warcraft trial, anyway this is the package I used to install > ATI Catalyst and picked the top one (Catalyst Software Suite)
Anyway once I was prompted to reboot, I rebooted, and my screen settings were still at the vga default, so I just updated it, and it went to a 3400series, was that right to do? I would like to get back to my original settings being the 3470.
I still can't find the ccc on my laptop, I saw it install, but I can't locate it? oh and when I opened up driver sweeper in safe mode, in the right pane there was alot of stuff with empty boxes, there was stuff like nvidea ect, but I just left them alone, and checked marked ati, and ran the clean,.
I suppose the only real way of knowing if my laptop is back to normal again, is if I get the BSOD again, would it be ok to download the 3470 driver, or would that just mess my laptop up again?
Thanks -
I just got the BSOD again, aaarrhhhh:confused2:
I don't know what to do, am stumped??
can somebody help me please, I have tried to find some sort of help online, but for the life of me, I just can't find anything that can fix this problem,I have done exactly step by step the guide I was given, but I have twice got the BSOD since I did the step by step guide , though strangely enough, when I got the BSOD, I got it again alittle time after I got it the first time after the step by step guide. There has to be something that someone knows about how to solve this issue, I came across something about a PublicKey Token in regard this issue I am having, but not being an experienced computer person myself, I don't really want to meddle with something I don't really understand. Just feeling totally on my own here, there must be something or someone out there that can advise me on how to fix this problem.
please help, I am desperate.
as I said up there in my previous post, my last computer died because of a BSOD, and now I am very worried of it happening again. -
Hey Richie, I'm pretty sure you're using the wrong drivers.
Try these 13.2 beta 7's AMD Catalyst
Also do the clean install how I wrote above. These drivers are great and I've have a lot of success with them.
Let me know how you go -

mine is only a 3400series, updated from the 3470, but thanks for the suggestion, I will read alittle more about it, and get back to you. I do appreciate all your help, but one thing though, this may not entirely be the culprit for the issue, but whilst BSOD's were happening, I had an external monitor connected to my laptop, and my friend said maybe disconnect it, and see what happens, and all has been ok up until now, I did read somewhere that the graphics driver can overheat, which makes alot of sense, as then I am thinking, hm, maybe the driver overheated, as it was giving graphics to another monitor, maybe thats why my games performance suddenly became sluggish, but since that update all this has been happening, and when I did the update, my game did definately slow down, even with the ingame video settings turned right down.
I have tore my brain out trying to remember exactly when I did connect the second monitor, was it before the update, or just after, but it was only recent, but as I said, all this has been happening since that update.
I will keep you updated of my progress in resolving this issue.
Thanks again for your feedback. -
Well since disconnecting the second monitor. I haven't had any BSOD's, so its looking maybe that was the cause of the BSOD's, but the issue of the game performance reduced to a sluggish setting, well maybe it was the graphics driver overheating because of the second monitor, I don't consider myself a very professional computer person, but my gut is telling me that maybe it was the second monitor that was the culprit, but this is only speculative of course, so a few more days without them BSOD's, would tell me that yes, it was the second monitor.
I still cannot open my Catalyst Control Centre, though I would like my settings to go back to the 3470, which was before the update, I have tore my brain out trying to remember exactly when I did connect the second monitor, maybe there is a report somewhere on my laptop that would tell me what date and time I did connect the second monitor, that would be ideal, as that way I would be able to know wether it was around the time of the update.
I appreciate all your help on this matter, and it has been a learning experience for me, also maybe someone else would be able to learn something from this page if their problem fell into the same circle as the issues I was having, hence the second monitor, I will keep you updated in a few days if I have experienced any more BSOD's.
Thanks -
Absolutely no BSOD since my last post, so it was the second monitor after all.
Thanks for all your help.
