    Hello all,

Apologies if this has already been asked. I did a search and couldn't find anything obvious.

I want to purchase a Sony Vaio SA3. However, through CTO you cannot change the optical drive to a Blu-ray ROM. You only have DVD or Blu-ray RW (£340!).

Now I could change it afterwards but it might be a hassle.

Therefore, what if I bought the pre-configured VPCSA3T9E which does inc a blu-ray rom and upgrade it to 8GB RAM and the 128 SSD to either a 500GB HDD or 256 SSD?

I'm sure the RAM upgrade is simple enough but I've heard the SSD in these laptops are bespoke or have different connectors? If so, is it still possible to swap it out for a HDD? Or can I easily replace it with my own 256GB SSD?

Sorry to ask so many questions. Just trying to way up the options.

    Thanks!

Hey did you ever upgrade this laptop? I am interested in buying the base package and I think it would be cheaper for me to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD on my own. I really want an SSD but don't want to shell out all of that upgrade money. Did you manage to upgrade it? How difficult was it?

Same here! Would really appreciate some of your findings. Thanks in advance.

BTW, does any one know which is a better model? SA or SB? I haven't been following the S series for a while.

If you upgrade to SSD with a retail SSD you will get a single SSD. There are of course some models that are very fast but with pure speed the quad-ssd raid setup of the SA still kicks . The 512GB array comes close to 900 MB/sec reading and over 700MB/sec writing! Not a single SSD on the market available will get even close to those speeds.
