    Hi There,

I have recently purchase a Vaio SB with the 128 GB drive which comes already half full with the installed software!

I have looked inside the machine and can get the drive out the model is a Toshiba THNSNC128GMMJ, I would like to fit a 256GB or 512Gb drive but i,m not sure what type of SSD to buy?

    Any ideas would be great.

    Cheers,

What sort of connector do the drives use? Eg sata, microsata etc.

It's the standard 9mm height 2.5 inch drive. It uses a SATA III connector if I'm not mistaken (needs confirmation from someone else)

It is standard. Any 2.5" SSD will fit. I just upgraded my SA -- essentially the same thing -- with a c300 128gb I had.

    Thanks all.

My concern is the current Thnsnc128GBmmj drive is micro sd +3.3VDC and the mounting chassis does not look like it will hold an other?

Any suggestions, can you get different mounting brackets ? will the voltage be ok?

    thx again..

PS could anyone post a suitable make/model for replacement 256GB or 512GB

You'll need to remove the casings for the ssds. If you have pictures that will give a sense of the dimensions. Voltage should be ok.

^Looks like the stock RAID SSD's are a bit custom (or 1.8") like the current Z. You may need to order the flex cable for the HDD equipped SA in order to swap with a standard 2.5" HDD/SSD

    Thanks...

What are the dimensions (length, width, height)? The screws seem to appear in the places similar to that in an standard SSD. The tabs at the top, bottom and left will restrict the size of the SSD put in there (duh).

The other option is: since it looks like you can take out the adapter, perhaps a larger disk (or an SSD with its casing) can be put in its place, with some sponge / rubber used as padding. The determining factor then becomes the positioning of the SATA cable.

I'm relocating so I don't have my 2.5" SSD with me, hopefully someone else can provide some dimensions of uncased drives that might fit. Here's a pic of the uncased 2.5" I was using (this is for VPC-Z1):

    Guys,

I have been on the phone to Crucial for a SSD 256GB they reckon the power cable will not reach and the drive is a bit special!

So after speaking to Sony UK US who just said there are no alternitive drives i took it back to the sony shop and ordered the SA with 512GB SSD cost an extra £800!!!! but there you go.

Thanks for all you advice i will post up some pics and let you know the performance
    thx

The drive is mounted in a carriage which fixes into from the top, I was looking at getting a 2.5" as suggested but it would have been a bodge fitting it and as it was a new laptop i decided to just get it changed.
