    Hi,

Is it possible to swap the optical drive in the SZ series by myself? I want to upgrade the optical drive, and instead of getting one from sony, can I just go out and buy a dvd drive and install it by myself?

What size is the optical drive in the sz series? 12.5mm? 9mm?

Or put it another way, will regular DVD drive that I can get, say from Newegg, fit into the SZ series?

The reason I ask is because it seems like the SZ series has an optical drive with a curved face plate. I wonder whether regular optical drive will fit in the optical drive slot.

I'm no expert on this but I think I read somewhere that the SZ optical drive is a specially manufactured extra-thin laptop drive, not a "standard" laptop drive. So might be harder to find a compatible replacement drive. Bit disappointing really, I wouldn't mind jamming a Blu Ray drive in there... ;-)

Think it has to be a specific one for the SZ - cause if you look at the drive now from the side - it slopes down where the bit nearer to the palm is much thinner.

But I would love to have a Blu-ray drive myself please!

I'm afraid you may not with SZ. My 3-year old GRT390's optical drive has been screwed and unable to find a replacement (in my place). but my compaq 1010c has been replaced with a optical drive aah... sand-papered exterior parts just to fit in the slot. :D
