Hi there. I recently bought a new sony vaio c series laptop and i would like some help regarding the charging process. Basically how do i charge? When do i plug in the charger? How long do i keep it in for? how do i prevent overcharging my battery? and any other battery preservation tips would be useful,
    thanks.

all new laptop (all brand) now use Lithium-ion battery which has no battery charging count affect so basically you charge when ever you want to do as your desire, there is also overcharged build in (it will cut off when it full) so dont worry about that too

Well, Sony and Apple use Lithium-Polymer batteries. A bit more fragile, but can be smaller and put in many different (read: slim) form factors.

sorry to be a little bit out of topic, but Apple says that its batteries will lasts for 5 years, is it true that sony also uses lipo , also lasts for 5 years ?

ps : in 5 years, we should expect the z series with quad core :D

Plug in the adaptor and leave it there except when you need to take the laptop somewhere. The charging circuit won't overcharge - the power icon will show a tooltip 'plugged in, not charging' when the battery is fully charged.

Open VAIO Control Center and enable the battery care feature. This stops the battery from charging over 80% or 50%, depending on the setting you choose. This increases the life of the battery, but the downside is that the effective capacity decreases, so you can't work on batteries for as long a duration as when the batteries were charged to 100%. I keep mine charged to 50%, but if I know I'm going to be out of the office for a while, I change the setting to 80% or even 100%, and charge to the set amount. After I get back, I change the setting back again.

Just because they use the same battery technology type does not mean they'll last the same time. The battery quality, but more importantly the charging approach makes a huge difference. Apple does charging right. I'm not sure about Sony, but they should be okay-ish.

    Read this: Apple - Batteries.

ditto. Actually, I could swear I saw that exact post of yours - about ivy bridge Zs having quad core cpus - in another thread. But it seemed out of place there too. Might you be having a cut/paste issue?
