well since i got my SR about a month ago i have installed 64bit windows three times and 32bit once. and im using 64bit windows now and made a post about it

if you want to do a clean 32bit like i did once , i had a vista disk to do a clean install and downloaded all the drivers and utilities from sony support

doing 64bit is trickier and you wont get exactly what you have right now, some sacrifices are to be made

i used a vista disk, not an upgrade disk or sony recovery disk. i had a real vista disk

download all the drivers copy them to a flash drive or burn to a cd or something to have them

start by installing sony firmware extension parser, then the sony shared library then the sony utilities . the rest, like sound , video , modem and lan can be installed in whatever order

Hi everyone, I 'm having strange trouble with a clean vista install on my Vaio SR. Can anyone of you please help.

I got all the latest drivers etc. from the sony support website for my Model.

I have a SR140E with Vista Home premium. I installed Visa Business with a Vista DVD and as per the instructions, started by installing the firmware extension parser and then the sony shared library and so on.

From what I can tell, the extension parser installed correctly because it tells me that it installed correctly and press "finish" to continue etc.

But when I install Sony Shared Library, it starts and when i'm at the "installation in progress.. please wait" screen, it just exits without any error. I get a "this program may not have installed correctly" message and if I click on "reinstall with recommended settings" i get an error saying "This application can only be run on Windows Vista"

I get the same thing with some of the drivers.... I am sing an original Vista Business DVD so I don't know what is wrong.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

is there any reason not to use the drivers/utils that are in the recovery dvd's?

i mean... everybody goes to the sony website to get the drivers and utils, but they are all in the recovery dvd's and they are much easier to install.

    cheers :)

The only reason is the assumption that you're getting the latest drivers when you get them from sony. IN my case, they were all the same but i got them from sony anyway.

I have the same issue if I use the sony drivers on the recovery disc. i.e. they won't work. Any help? please I need to join a domain and home premium won't let me.

I just did a semi-clean install last night on my brand new SR. It was MUCH easier than I was expecting, since I think I found a shortcut. Basically, burn the recovery DVD's. Then, boot from the recovery dvd's (NOT the recovery partition) and begin a complete redo. I think it's the option for Restore Complete System. Set up the partitions however you want, then go ahead and run the restore. At some point it will eject the dvd and ask you to reboot. Standard windows setup, etc. It will reboot a couple of times. Then finally, you'll get to a screen that says "Installing System Components" or something, and it will ask you to insert the recovery cd. DON'T. Just click cancel or X out. Another window will pop up, same thing, keep clicking cancel. Eventually, it will reboot, and you'll be back to a fresh windows install. All the drivers (except WiFi strangely) and Vaio utilities were installed, but the only software installed was Adobe Reader, Napster and Roxio. I went from 81 processes to 69. Seemed like a perfect solution!

I would repost this in a new thread if i were you, the lot of people in here seem to be quite inexperienced, i suggest posting in the general SR thread or make a new posting....
