    Hello All:

I got my Z550 from Amazon and it's great! I've read a lot of the other posts about a clean Vista install for the Z and I'm considering doing it but it takes time so I was wondering if you guys really think its worth it.

I'm actually very surprised by how fast my Z runs with all the Sony utils which is I why I dont know if it'll be much faster with a clean install.

One note, I did do a system reformat and restore because I screwed up some system files. For some reason, the restore didnt install all the crap that the computer came with like Office 07 and some other random crap. The Z felt faster after the restore. Sleep mode and wake up are fast and overall it's great.

If you guys think it's still worth it to do a clean install, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

    Its difficult to say.
On a Medion Laptop, my mothers one running XP home was always running less processes than mine on which I installed professional.

Now there have been countless threads about this before.
I'd say the best answer I can give you is:
If you're happy with the current speed leave it as it is or do some cleaning up in the form of removin things from Autostart (can be done with CCleaner) and disabling services.

Another problem with a clean instal is that you may run into problems when you don't instal drivers/libraries in the right order.

    What's the saying?
"If it ain't broke don't fix it!" ??? I think so.

I did a clean install on the Z I got and it seems quicker - to be honest I did not really play with it much with the original software.

I turned it on to make recovery disks, removed the hard drive put a faster one in and did a clean install.

I did a clean install on a new Dell XPS that i used to own and i found zero difference compared to how things were with a semi clean install.

You did a clean install . I also just got my hands on a z & like you the first thing i did was blow out the recovery partition & selected the new recovery disk option of a clean install .

Sony has redesigned the recovery disk & now gives the option to do a clean install which only installs required drivers & applications .

It works so much better than trying to find all the correct drivers & installing them along with required apps in the correct sequence . You install 1 thing out of order & need to reformat & start again in many cases .

The only application that i wanted gone after a clean install with the recovery disk was MS works .

I would also agree that its alot faster now then with all the sony bloatware .

Does it remove all preinstalled software (Adobe) or just the trial software ?

i dnt think that will make any obvious faster. since vista really take longer process than xp.

i think u may keep the crapwares if u dnt hate them much, and uncheck the useless items in 'startup' under 'system configuration utility'. this method will help u avoid the mistake due to delete unknow software.

Seriously? My SR is arriving next week, and I was planning on the whole annoying clean install process, but now I can just do it from the recovery disk (that I create)??? That would be fantastic!

It doesnt remove adobe , works , roxio & webcam software . Adobe & works are not required & can be uninstalled but roxio & webcam software need to be installed in order to use the webcam or burn or copy disks , although other 3rd party software could probably be used if desired .

There is no trial software of any kind installed using this option , not even norton or onecare .

Its not technically a clean install , since a clean install of vista from oem or retail copy wont install any applications but im very happy sony has started listening to customers & offered this option on the recovery disk.

Yes , when i said i blew out the recovery partition i meant i deleted it to recover the disk space .

Vaio TZ, you're right, its great that the recovery does not include all the original junk. FYI, I did format the drive but it didnt blow away the recovery partition. Do you think the recovery disk and recovery partition give the same results? At this point, I don't think I'm going to bother with a real clean install although I have 80+ processes running, seems a bit high.

Unless you tidy up the autostart that seems about right.
    Oh and the services.

The results of using the recovery disk or the recovery partition would be the same .

I have 80 processes running as well , seems to be very quick reguardless.

Maybe someone here who has done a clean install would care to post how many processes they have running .

To me having a few extra processes running outweigh the drawbacks one could encounter doing a clean install or apps not working correctly from disabling services .

If your not happy with your performance & decide to do a clean install i would consider downloading acronis true image home beta version , its free & make a image you can restore if need be .

You can use ccleaner and from there safely modify autostart settings, take down a few updates, maybe the automatic start of adobe and quicktime.
