I got my SZ280 today, pre-loaded with XP Pro and all of the typical Sony bloatware. My question is this - should I go through what apparently is a terrible ordeal of doing a clean install of XP Pro, or should I just manually delete the bloatware and clean out the registry?
Thanks

if it was me, i'd spend the extra time to do a clean install... saves you on guesswork and potential troubleshooting
if it causes any problem after the fresh install, you can just call the manufacturer/microsoft and scream their ear out -
I actually did a manual config, and suprisingly, it's way fast! I did msconfig edits, defragging, and of course uninstalling. But now I defrag my entire HD in under 5 minutes, and it's pretty dang fast. Best of all, I didn't screw up Media Direct.

Hey Michael, can you tell me which of the msconfigs you edited?

if you don't want to go through the trouble of a clean install, try a semi-restore. It uses the recovery DVDs but doesn't install most of the bloat.

What I did was uninstall obviously bloated junk, like AOL, that spyware thing, and the antivirus thing. There's Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, a trial of MS Office... a bunch of stuff.
What you do is uninstall by Add/Remove Programs, go delete the directory in Program Files, do whole system searches using the search tool, and clean your registry with RegScrubXP afterwards (link in the optimizing guide).
