Ey guys, my friend has a sony vaio vgn-fs940 and has had it for a little over a year. He just recently started experiencing problems after installing activstats, for school work. After having installed the program my friend's computer started running very slowly and whenever he plays any type of media, the sound blips and distorts periodically.

He has checked his computer for spy ware, ad ware, and viruses. I also made him clean his registry, and nothing worked at all. He currently has 512MB RAM and just recently ordered 2GB of RAM from Newegg. Will that extra RAM fix the problem or is there something wrong with the system? Would you recommend a reformat?

Any help or suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance :D .

yes it will solve the problem for the most part but are you sure you have the right ram Ex: ddr vs ddr2. the correct fsb. and make sure his motherboard supports it

I have no experience with this program, but did see on their website that activestats has issues on networks where ipx/spx and netbui protocals are installed.

Neither should be installed by default on an XP machine unless you are hooking up to an old netware server or a network with pre-windows xp machines (nt, 2000, 98)

But, that begs the question--why does Activestats have an issue with computers with these protocals enabled? The FAQ is silent on this issue.

I would be curious if the problem disappears when the computer is removed from a network though (and suspicious why it is messing with the network)

btw--the system requirements are very, very low--I don't think that having more ram will make a bit of difference

Thanks for the responses. I forgot to mention, that my friend has actually uninstalled activstats and the problem still persists. So could it be something wrong with the registry or the system somehow?

Well, obviously something is wrong, but diagnosing it this way is tricky.

    Start with a chkdsk

    start > run
    cmd
    in command line box type
    chkdsk /f
    <enter>

    Answer YES

    Reboot
    Let chkdsk run

On restart, right click MY COMPUTER, choose MANAGE, go to EVENT VIEWER, click +, choose APPLICATIONS.

Look for WINLOGON in right pane
    double click

in the box that appears, look for XX in BAD SECTORS.
    Anything?

If no, right click on APPLICATIONS and choose CLEAR ALL EVENTS
    Do the same for SYSTEM

Now, go to disk defragmenter and defragment

    Once complete, reboot

Go back to event viewer...look under APPLICATIONS and SYSTEM for any RED Xs or Yellow !s.

    what are they?
