I'm interested to know what cables I would need to purchase to be able to hook up my SZ to my television set. Would I need seperate cables for sound, and picture? My laptop only has VGA out port - no S video, or TV out.

I have a 1 year old flat screen HDTV so I'm assuming this has all the ports needed to be hooked up to my laptop.

    Sony SZ 320

the sz docking station has a DVI out, don't know weather i can buy one DVI to hdmi cable connect to my hdtv( which has a hdmi-in) through this sz docking station, will be a sharper and better image than the standard vga performs in this case?

Then you'll simply need a VGA male to either male/female cable, check the connection on your TV.

I didn't know the docking station had a DVI out. Anyway if it does then it should work. I've got a DVI->HDMI cable that I used for my Acer Aspire laptop and it worked fine, looks awesome on my Pioneer 43" HD.

i use the docking station's dvi out. before that, i used rbg out from the laptop and picture quality is noticably worse than dvi.

anyways, it's like connecting your laptop to any external monitor. if you're using dvi-out from the dock, then buy a dvi cable. if you're going to use rgb out from the laptop, then get a rgb video cable.

if u are asking me, the two tv's i use the sz with is a panasonic pt-43lc14 rear projection lcos 1080i hdtv in the bedroom and a sony kds-r60xbr2 1080p rear projection sxrd hdtv in the living room. as for resolution, i dont' remember but it's what the tvs' owner's manual suggested.

All I need is a VGA cable for both sound, and picture yes? Theres a port on my TV for "PC Audio in" - what is its purpose? Do you know what kind of quality I should expect? Is one end of a VGA cable female, and the other male? Can you also give me a direct link to what type of cable I need to purchase, I've looked on eBay but theres multiple types of VGA cables.

VGA will only give you video only.

You'll link to buy a seperate audio cable to plug it from your laptop to your TV, through the "PC Audio In" port.

Not right now, I'll edit this post afterwards. :)

Actually before I go on a hunt, what does your TV have at the back? Is it a male or female VGA connector?

Which one does your a) laptop and b) TV have:

    Female VGA

    Male VGA

There you go then, you answered your own question. :)

You need a VGA cable which has a MALE end and a FEMALE end on the other side.

:) Thanks, how about the cable for sound? One TV has a PC audio in port, but on the other I only see Audio AMP, Audio L, R.

more than likely you're laptop will only have a headphone out. for that end you will need a 1/8" stereo mini.

for the tv end, it'll depend on your tv. assuming it's a newer model (since it has vga/rgb input) the audio input is probably a stereo mini as well (it'll look like the headphone hole on your laptop/ipod/walkman/etc.). if that's the case, all you will need is a stereo mini to stereo mini audio cable for the correct length.

the other scenario is rca input (2 plugs/holes red and while colored) in which case you will get a stereo mini to rca audio cable for the correct length.

fry's and radio shack are both good places to get these for a good price.

Thank you, now with these cables will the sound come from my laptop, or the TV? I would prefer only my TV.

if you get the right cables and hook everything up correctly, sound will come from your tv. think of it this way, it's just like hooking up headphones/speakers to your laptop.

btw, each manufacturer labels the same things differently. for example, my panasonic calls the vga input "rgb", etc. if it looks like a hole from your average laptop/ipod/walkman etc, then it's a 1/8" sterei mini connection. if it has 2 seperate holes, one red and one white colored, then it's a rca connection. those are your only 2 options (other than digital but it's very unlikely).

Well i tried a cable similar to VGA to S-Video/RCA (Composite) and the closest i got on TV was a barely viewable desktop on a corrupt B/W screen with both the Nvidia and intel graphics.

Might depend on the options the video card driver has as well. But i say it probably won`t work and might be better off buying a VGA-2-TV convertor box.

I am thinking about buying a VAIO SZ notebook, and I wonder if I will be able to use a cable like this one ( http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-VGA-to-TV-C...3QQihZ010QQcategoryZ41999QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) to convert the VGA output port into a S-Video input port of a TV. Has anyone tried this out before?

This point particularly worries me: "Please [..] make sure that your VGA card has TV-Out function capability through the VGA connector to ensure this cable will work for you!"

    Thanks.

unfortunately this won't work. because s-video and vga signals are different.

i'm looking for the same, but we need an vga to s-video converter.

Would be awesome if a future S/SZ series model would contain a HDMI (1.3) port and S/PDIF ( Sony Philips Digital Interface and Sony doesn't have this on their premium model!!!)

An important thing to remember is whether the TV has a PC input or not, not being the more common answer.

If the tv does indeed have a PC input then a vga to DVI or component would be the best approach.

S video will work and is a no brainer but will usually restrict the resolution to a very low level.

Alternately you can always get a separate analogue to digital convertor then you can go VGA to dvi or hdmi. Standalone convertors cost about $300 the last time i check though.

    Hope that helps.

That cable will work just fine. I had the same problem before the did the following: nVidia control panel > Display > Change display configuration > under "Select the display you want to use" select dual. I forgot the exact name, but I get three options total when I have my TV connected, any of the last two will do.

I did that! But still not working... Tks anyway!

I'm thinking there's some issue with the cable! Cause it's says "no input devices r connected" so it's not "reading" the cable...

Guess i'll probably need to buy another cable!

    Anyone else has any idea?!

My TV displayed the same message when the display was set to laptop so it might not be the cable. What kind of television do you have? You might have to change the input type. If you still have the manual for your TV it will say how to get it working. If not, you can always call up the manufacturer.

Well, i have a samsung ln-t4053h n it says i can use vga to vga on the website!

Maybe is some configuration on my SZ or the cable when i put on display options/ settings/ extend my windows desktop onto this monitor (2) n click the FN + 7 it occurs a problem... n nothing works... when i turn that out n click it shows the option but all that happens is that zooms my wallpaper n i can do nothing but restart the computer cause i just see a lil part of the screen.

    Anyone?! lol

I guess i'll need to buy the docking station n use the dvi! :(
