Hello people~ I have 1 year old SZ and I've been trying to connect it to my Samsung LCD. I've tried so many different things then I gave up for a while but today I finally got it to work.
All you need is the Vaio Event update (2.3XXX somthing the one for monitor problems) and VGA male to male and audio cable. I had hard time installing the update that's why it never worked. The Vaio Event update didn't clear the old one, so it couln't get installed. Then all I had to do is changing the resolution from 1280*800 to 1920*1080. Yup, the problem was Samsung TV not recognizing 1280*800 resolution, I tried 1024*768 and it worked as well.
So if you are having problem connecting SZ to Samsung try 1920*1080 at 60Hz.
I'm a noob so this may be a common knowledge so no noob pick ons

its best to use the TV's native resolution. if you do clone mode (tv screen and lappy screen are the same) then you cant do this. But if you are extending the desktop (so both screens show different stuff) then you can set each screen to its native res. much better quality picture

How do you change the resolution in your laptop to 1920 X 1080? I mean, my S460PB have far less than that for its monitor, so if I connect the VGA cable to the Samsung TV and select "Monitor" mode, the TV will show blank and I can't change the resolution.
So just to be clear, the steps are (after installing the update):

OK, I tried installing the Vaio Event Update (per the link from Babydarklord) and changed the resolution to 1024x768, still no go. I brought my laptop to my friends house again and tested it with his NEC 17" monitor and guess what: DOESN'T WORK EITHER.

Note that the install of the Vaio Event update failed the first time, even after I closed all the background task (Anti-virus, etc.) but left all the Sony Services on. Reinstalling doesn't work and I can't uninstall the update since it's now in the Add Remove program

This apply to BOTH of my S460 and FSS550. Man... I am confused now... What the hey?

Go Control Panel (classic view). look for Vaio Central.Go to system information
look for plug in play devices. disable the automatic function just remove the check.
    then try fn+f7 .

I did that (through Vaio Control Center), but still no go. I had a feeling the VAIO Event Update installation that went haywire was causing it. I am looking at ways to uninstall that, but do you know how to?

Try deleting Vaio Event update manually. Go to system folder and click on Sony forder and delete the Vaio Event update folder. It may be a protected folder but try deleting or send it to Desktop and delete it. Once you successfully delete the Vaio Event Update you won't be able to use your Function key+F1,F2... and so on. Reboot the system and install the Vaio Event Update 2.3... Then change your resolution to 1024*768 and try connecting.
Once the mTV's detected you should be able to change to higher resolution, just don't use 1280*800.
P.S. I read a sony update and some models needed DLL update as well

Still no go. I have tried every possible way of trying to connect to the Samsung TV and the problem occured not only on my S460PB, but ALSO with the FS550. That's 2 different Sony laptops exhibitng the same problem. I am sure it;s not my TV, but the Dell Inspiron and HP NC6400 works just fine.

The only thing I can try is re-install WinXP, but I think that'll be a moot point given the above, not to mention I'll be spending hours reinstalling everything.

I think Sony (purposely) personalize their laptop so much, even at the hardware level that compatibility (to monitor, etc.) becomes an issue. I mean, if I want to upgrade to Vista, I have to buy a DVD that contains tons of Sony specific drivers, Event Services, and what not which is required.

I am going to keep researching, but at this point I just want to sell my Sony's.
