    Hi all,

I just bought sony vaio laptop FW series (FW31E) and I'm wandering how can I connect it to my LCD TV and to 5.1 surround home cinema system.

I'm thinking first to try to connect my laptop to TV with HDMI for both streams sound and video, and then to connect the TV to home cinema system with optical audio cable for sound.

    Is this possible?
    Have anyone try this before?

    Thanks!!

i don't have FW series. but i have S series. it's gonna depend on what sound system type you have . if you have an AV receiver (AVR) & 5.1 speaker system, and happens your AVR has HDMI in & out, then :

    1. it will be best if you can use HDMI out with following order : laptop > AVR > TV. so your sound will be processed in AVR & video signal will be passed to TV

    2. if you AVR doesn't have any HDMI nor support HDMI, you can use analog connection for audio. another option to use SPDIF connection if your AVR has optical digital input. in case you opt SPDIF connection you'll need TOSLINK cable (it's cheap) and you may need external sound card (USB model like ASUS Xonar U1) together with a program to enable SPDIF connection like AC3 filter. as far as i know VAIO doesn't support SPDIF on all of their on board sound card modul.

    hope it helps.

I think I can’t go with first option because I don’t have HDMI input port in AVR.

Anyway I will try to connect the laptop directly to LCD TV with HDMI cable and with standard two pin audio cable to AVR for the sound.

Because the laptop has some DolbyDigital sound support I will try to configure it somehow for 5.1.

I will let you know if I will success.

    Thanks for you post masanggoro!!
