I am about to buy a notebook and I have my eyes on the SZ or TZ models. I love the design, portability, weight, and battery of both models. I would be using the notebook mostly for programming (ie Java, C++, and C#), web surfing, and some movies. I'm leaning more towards the TZ but if it can not handle my programming needs then I would go with the SZ. I have done research but I can not find the solution. What do you guys recommend? Thank You.

As an owner of both the TZ and the SZ6 series, I kind of agree with vitamin water. The TZ is super for mobility and most tasks the typical traveling person would do, but it lacks the power of the SZ, both in its processor and graphics.

You will not be able to get onsite service for the TZ. Your service options will be limited to sending it to the service depot.

I believe on site service is available for the TZ, where does it say it is not offered?

What do you guys use your TZ for then? I'm trying to get an idea of what I would use the TZ for.

I spoke to someone who had received compensation for the onsite portion of their warranty because tech support said Sony changed their mind and decided not to offer an sort of onsite for this model.

I use TZ to replace my blackberry and PDA. Mainly for email, web, data sync and communication on the road. It does all tasks that an UMPC promise, but in a more convenient way.

Honestly, I wouldn't count it to run any demanding software due to its crippled peformance. C2D ULV 1.20Ghz + 945 / 224MB on board video is a joke for any program that rely on raw processing power, whether its OpenGL, DirectX, recoding or folding. Not mention how hard it is to do a path layer in Photoshop on 11.1 screen with a touchpad. LOL

To put it simple, TZ is designed for communication not calculation.

Thanks for the reply. I kind of knew that, but the TZ is so sexy I tried to persuade myself that the TZ is good enough. I'll go with the SZ then. Thanks again.

I disagree with what they told you about TZ.

I owned for a month a TZ-sold it- and it was my main laptop, and did everything smoothly. Of course is essential the SSD on it, because if you take the 4200rpm HD then can't do that much. The TZ with SSD is not only for simple tasks as e-mail, web browsing or word, but also heavy stuff like encoding videos.

How is the TZ for web browsing? Is the display too small or is it comfortable for surfing the web?

I have a vaio tx and it is my first ultraportable. It is good for web browsing on the go for maybe an hour or two at a time, but if you are going to be using it all day youll need to plug in an external monitor or youll start to get headaches.

I would definitely go to a sony store and test it out for as long as possible (eg. try web surfing for 30 mins and see how it goes).
