i wonder if there's an app that i can install that i can control the vaios fan with? right now, it shuts down for 1 min, goes on for 1 min and then shuts down again and its kinda annoying. i want it to always be on, even if i put it in performance mode.

My old fujitsu (pentium M) has a keyboard key that could stop the fan. Simply stop it. It works everytime i am not running too heavy / 3D applications.
It brings total silence and it is so great.

    I wish my Z had this. :(

I guess underclocking the cpu could stop the fan as well ?

My old Fujitsu-Siemens had a button like that - all it did was reduce the CPU frequency (multiplier) to be able to reduce the heat emission. It is pretty much what the Thermal Control Strategies in Vaio Control Center are supposed to do...

Funnily though neither the button on my Fujitsu, nor the thermal strategies on my current VAIO have any effect :D

The main reason is that that method only eventually affects the CPU, but NOT the dedicated GPU and the GPU is the main heat emitter in the system. I guess your Fujitsu does not have dedicated GPU, does it ;)

But on the other hand the Z is hybrid so this shouldn't be a problem.
