I was wondering if any of you have heard of when Sony plans to start shipping the SZ with the Merom? I didn't find anything on their official website. Thanks

You'll probably see them in a month or two. As far as I know they havn't announced any, but you know they'll have some sort of SZ300 series with the Merom in it. Look for the news soon would be my guess.

I have it from a very good source that the new series of Core 2 Duo laptops will be coming out in September and October. The new AR2xx series with the T7200 and T5600 will be out in Sept, with the SZ out in October. The top of the line AR290 will have the T7200, 2gig of ram, blu ray, and 250gig hard drive. I will post as I get more info...

If you dont want to wait, the prices of the current SZ's have dropped at sonystyle this morning. The SZ230 was $2099, but today it's $1899...Same with the others!

If the new SZ launch out with Merom the price probably start with minimum configuration (T5500:1.66GHz)) at around $2500??

I don't know but why would it be so expensive? The Merom isn't more expensice then the Yonah so why would they raise the price so much?

hes guessing. but while the chip is cheaper or same in bulk as the core duo, manufactures can make the final price anything they want.

Merom is more expensive than Yonah. And the new SZ model would have more features. These make the price more expensive. I just guess.

I recently read that Merom has nearly double the amount of transistors - 151M on the Yonah versus 291M on the Merom. That makes the Merom more complex and therefor more expensive. Besides I'd expect pre-n wireless and other things in a new SZ. Maybe it won't be much more expensive but my guess would be it will costs more.

My guess is that Sony won't do the pre-N wireless, and will wait till the Santa Rosa chipset comes out to implement the N wireless. Why bother with pre-N stuff, that will just be obsolete when the final 802.11n specs come out, and make the pre-N stuff possibly incompatable.

In other news, I think you'll find the SZ300 series very affordable for what you get. At least what I've seen is good news.

Well I was hoping they would release it in the customizable sz240. If so I will definitely get it. If not I might have to find another laptop which I really don't want to do because I really like the sz. Do you think they'll put the Merom on the SZ240?

It'll probably be a whole new SZ340 build to order type thing.

In my opinion, Sony may not want to release the next SZ model with Merom in it because they want to commercialize the Design of SZ as much as possible. The the life cycle of Yonah has not declined yet while the Merom is just at the begining. In the next model of SZ (i.e. SZ3x) we may find some improvement in terms of capacity (e.g. 2.33 GHz, HDD, etc. as well as some bugs fixed)

So Merom would be used for different lines of Sonyvaio. But there is possibility of upgrading from Yonah to Merom for SZ owners.

Like many people, I like SZ design, and so let see how the next design for Merom-equipped Vaio look like.

I hope they don't. Personally I need a laptop by the end of september and I don't exactly have an unlimited budget and if they make new models they'll probably be expensive.
