did you recently reinstall windows? And are you running xp pro or home?

If your running home, that would explain alot. Xp home has a problems detecting both cores sometimes. Especially since its not officially supported by home. Even though we know it is.

Could be that your HAL files might have become corrupted. I have copied mine from another dual porcessor PC before at work when I developed that poblem and It fixed it with no porblems.

If your HAL file was corrupted, you wouldn't even boot into Windows. Big time BSOD with that.

Check the screen shot below. If you don't have "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", then you'll need to do some Google searching for how to change that.

Theres no way around it. You have to reformat. Or install the ACPI Multiprocessor PC via repair install. I had this same problem with my desktop and XP Home. After 18 reformats failed..........i finally just installed XP Pro.

JohnNL, do you mean that, when you go in the Performance tab of the Task Manager and then select View>CPU History>One Graph Per CPU, the CPU Usage History window doesn't split into two plots?

I must say that the fact that your CPU-Z screenshot shows the Processor Section dropdown list as dimmed is, for sure, wierd...

I am afraid ProphetX is right...

days later, still running on 1 'core'

I have a feeling its my power saving option.
I remembered getting a 'battery not inserted correctly, please insert again... ' kind of message one day while i had the battery and AC in the laptop.

Now i'm guessing that the CPU is staying on powersave instead of switching to performance once its in AC.

How can i fix this ?
Does the speedstep have anything to do with this ?

Hmmm..... not really sure why you didn't do the reinstall. That is the ONLY way to fix this problem. That or a repair of the os.

Oh and dont use a windows xp home disc. The power save features such as speedstep reduce clock speeds not number of cores.

Anyone have similar experiences or know the fix for it?

i did not reinstall windows, but i did put in the ghost copy in where i was SURE that the processor was correct.

But...after copying over the ghost i still get 1 graph instead of 2

    what is wrong ?
