I remember seeing a thread long time ago about someone putting a preproduction merom into a first gen SZ and having it run fairly well. Is there anyone else out there who's made the upgrade? I'm looking at either the T5500 or the T7200. Is there enough of a performance difference between the two to justify the $100 difference? I'm particularly looking at upgrading for gaming purposes, namely WoW. Will the nvidia 7400 still be the bottleneck or will I see some improvement with the upgrade? Also, I'm assuming I update to the newest bios before I install correct?

You will not see a difference in gaming, the 7400 is a major bottleneck. I would not really recommend upgrading to C2D unless there is a reason you need 64bit.

It is possible to drop a C2D in a Core or Core Duo slot, but you may need a BIOS upgrade.

As David mentioned above, there's no real reason to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo unless you need to work with 64-bit applications. The performance increase really won't justify the money you'll spend to do it.

I'd suggest you wait until you need a new notebook and just get whatever will suit you at that time in terms of processors.

As far as gaming is concerned--you wouldn't see any difference with a CPU upgrade as the go 7400 is still going to be your main bottleneck.

Thanks for your opinions. I'll stick with my ancient SZ150. :)

You can upgrade to the Merom processor if you upgrade your BIOS to the newest one available on Sony's support site right now. If I remember correctly...the BIOS version has "83" in it somewhere.

Neoguri, like many others, I'll suggest that you stick with your current CPU & save up the money that you intend to purchase the CPU for future laptop purchases.
