    Hi everyone

We know the final Vista will be releasing next year. My decision making to buy SZ230 (1.83 GHz, 1GBRAM, NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7400, 120 GB HDD) now just depend on if it could run Vista at Premium Level or just "Vista Capable"?
Microsoft has just announced requirements for Desktop, not for Laptop. I think GeForce Go 7400 may be OK as new bios would be release to fix problem of incompatibility. RAM can be upgraded easily if necessary. BUT I am just wondering whether CoreDuo T2400 (1.83GHz) could powerful enough to run Vista at Premium level?????

    Pls help, Thanks

Yes it should, the 7400 is a pretty good card, even tho noone knows for sure, seeing as how the OS is still 8 months away from a release...

I was told it is not powerful enogh to run VISTA at Ready Premium mode. You'd better get Merom SZ to fully enjoy VISTA.

That does apply to the crappy Intel graphics chip but with the NVidia on Vista will run pretty well. Question is what do you do with Intel chip? I'd like it because it saves power if I don't run 3d apps and use it ike 75% of the time I'm on my SZ2. Under Vista I'd be force to use the 7400 all the time.

NVidia7400 should be OK. BUT I am concerned about the Processor. Wondering Coreduo 1.83 GHz could not be powerful enough to run VISTA next year. I am poor so could not buy a new one within 3 years.

    many tks

The Core 2 Duo isn't dramatically more powerful than Vista...... both the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo should be powerful enough as CPU's to handle Vista. The bigger concern would be the graphics card, but the GeForce 7400 should be able to handle it (and merom-based SZs apparently have the same GeForce 7400, so they will not be that different in terms of overall performance).

Why so many people are much concerned about VISTA. For sure my SZCoreDuo T2400 1.83GHz will stay with XP pro until the next 3 years. Even VISTA will be releasing next year, it could not becoming popular.

im guessing they think its gonna be like the jump from windows 98 and 2000 to XP. other than the eye candy, i dont see much to be excited about. maybe theres stuff i dont even know about. also, if you ppl are even wondering if a core duo can handle it, my P-M 1.8 has no chance..lol

The Intel GMA900 graphics have been reported to support WDDM, meaning that Vista premium with Aero will run on it. You can check both Intel and Microsoft websites for more info.

Many thanks for your replies. Merom is better mainly for energy saving.

No, exactly the opposite is the case. Merom is better when judgeing in a performance per Mhz scale but generally they consume more power and generate more heat than the Yonah CPUs.

If this is the case, what are the superior features of the Merom as energy-saving has long been considered a critical issues for mobileprocessor's innovation!!!

Well there's a misunderstanding here. Merom is better and deliver better performance per MHz and per energy consumption unit. BUT compared directly the Yonah consumes less energy and creates less heat. On top of that the major boost from Merom comes with a 64bit OS, under windows xp you won't notice much.

Accurate numbers show that the Merom has a power consumption of 20-34W (depending of throttleing status) while a Yonah consumes 13-31W. The consumption at max clock spped is not much different (Merom consumes 10% more) clocked down though the difference is much bigger with Merom consuming 50% more power in that mode, 20W of the Merom versus 13W the Yonah uses - thats a lot in respect to battery lifetime and heat in that "silent" mode.

The Merom may be like 20% faster under optimal circumstances and may consume 10% more power and generate an equal amount of more heat, that shows that the Merom is better beause increase in performane is bigger than the one in power consumption. Absolutely though the Yonah is more energy efficient, esp. in clocked down mode running at 1Ghz. So if you're mainly doing office duties and only need power from time to time you may be better of using a Yonah.
