    Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM Drives

    What does it say?

Mine says SCSIVAX etc. etc. --however, I believe that the drive in question is a virtual one created by Alcohol 120.
It seems that my actual drive completely disappeared.
When I in CD's, they spin momentarily, then stop. No programs read them.
How do I re-enable my Mashushita(?) drive?

    Mine says MATSHITA UJ-832D.

Did the drive stop working after you installed Alcohol?
Have you tried disabling virtual drives?

Don't know why it didn't show up in my original post but I also asked if you tried adding new hardware with the wizard?

My bad, I figured it out--
    For some reason,
    Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
was disabled. No idea what that was/is, but I reenabled it, and voila.

Ah, well. Thanks for your help, guys.

While not saying you did that (turning off sys restore) to anybody out there, DON'T turn it off. Unlike the system restore in ME, the XP system restore does help with minor computer fixes. Any tech will tell you not to turn it off, any tech that tells you is crap, check his license. ;) Again, the big point is it will only fix minor issues. So it wont fix everything. Also, if it fails, its a good indicator that something has changed since the last checkppoint you are applying.
