Installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro, but now I can't get the USB ports to be 2.0. They are stuck in the slow 1.0 standard. I thought I installed all the Sony drivers as well as all the XP updates.

2ndly, my cpu temp has been though the roof lately, maybe it's the sacramento weather (95 F), but last night during a torture test w/ prime95, the temp was close to 90. I shut the program down immediately and notice my idle temp was around 47, I thought most folks are in the low 40s. When playing the Battlefield 2 demo, the temp would reach the mid and high 60s, is this safe for our laptops? Thanks!

Regarding the USB 2.0, I am not sure you need any Sony drivers. I would first double check the transfer rate of whatever you are sticking in the port. Most, if not all, cannot reach the ideal USB 2.0 rate.

As for the temperature, I think it really depends on the room temperature, air venting path and what power setting you are on. My S170 is idling at 53 C now, sitting to the left the test unit I am typing on. We are pretty hot and humid today with high around 95 F in here too. You probably don't need to worry too much if the temperature is in the 60-70 C range. I would try to get a notebook cooler if you keep getting (or need to stay) 90 C a lot.

thanks for the reply, I undervolted the system w/ centrino hardware control and idle has gone down to 42 or so. For the USB controller, I'm getting the following error: "The USB Mass Storage Device will function at reduced speed. You must add a HI-SPEED USB host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance." I have installed every update available for windows XP, is there something i missed? tks!

That is a Windows problem. You would need to check your windows update and setting. I suspect you have the driver but somehow it was not being used or being over-written by an older one. Good luck.
