So one day I randomly noticed this really nice crack (heck it's not even a crack, it's tore off) part of my case...

I'm not even sure how this happened. I've dropped this laptop maybe once, and it was on carpet. Does anyone think this is because of faulty design? Either way, I'm pretty mad about it. It's weird because the other hinge had this exact same problem, but I was able to snap that one back into place. With this one, I can't. Will Sony charge me a pretty penny to fix this? I'm just not sure if there are any other options...like if you guys would think super glue would work or something. Help appreciated.

Since you dropped it even on carpet, I don't say its faulty. This corner hits badly. I notice minor dent on the corner of the lid too.
There would be a screw underneath bottom loosen part which is broken (usually plastic) so you can't snap it back. -
I have a crack in the identical place and i have never dropped the machine. my argument with Sony is that the case is not fit for purpose as it is a side spread problem which sony denies. The vaio was my fifth laptop. I fly frequently so it does more than just sit in one spot unaccustomed to any action. However my two previous Toshibas lasted 3 years each and my new Samsung copes with the travel fine. When I say its a wide spread problem let me back that up with some anecdotal research.
If you google “SONY laptop cracked case” you get 2, 870, 000 hits.
Using rival brands, if you google “Toshiba laptop cracked case”, you get 116, 000 hits. If you google “Dell laptop cracked case”, you get 210, 000 hits. This seems disproportionate high for SONY.
If you make it more specific and put “SONY VAIO laptop cracked case”, you get 1,260, 000 hits. That is 4 times the hits of all Toshiba and Dell laptop varieties compared to the just the VAIO range.
I reported problems with the case after 6 months which sony simply ignored while they fixed another issue the fact that the DVD drive didnt work. They took 3 months to do this. The dvd drive failed again one month after it was returned to me, in hindsight because the issue was the poor structural integrity of the case all along. The flimsy case design is also mentioned in wikapedia. The new model might have fixed the problem as they no longer use the same plastic. However the appalling customer service means i no longer trust Sony quality control. -
Hey guys, same exact problem here. But this happened after 4 years. The Computer works fine though. Screen is working perfectly.. So my question is, should I worry about it or start looking for a replacement skin?(Is it even possible to replace without damaging anything, cause it seems like its all connected?) Or maybe glue it somehow? I have no idea what to do, and I'm not really sure I would be qualified to take off the skin and replace it with a new one on.
Let me know what you did !
Or let me know if you have any good recommendations for a new pc
I'm a sucker for windows, so I'm one of the many who keeps complaining about windows 8 and desperately clings to her windows 7 in hope for that windows 9 will be my savior....

I have a Sony Vaio SVE1712Z1EB and this has developed unexplained hairline cracks in the case of the top of the lid. The laptop lives on a desk and has not been dropped, not has anything been dropped on the laptop.
Sony’s response = Regrettably, physical damage is not repaired under warranty, meaning that repairing your VAIO will be chargeable. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by your experience with your VAIO casing =
The hairline cracks are not the result of physical damage
My Toshiba laptop has no such problem after five years of use. I was recommended Sony as being a better engineered computer than Toshiba – sadly that has proved to be untrue
The Sony arrived with dead pixels, which Sony also considered to be acceptable
