Hi all,
Just an FYI. I recently bought a Vaio NW from Best Buy using a credit card. I always use my card to pay for day-to-day expenses to collect the miles. I called the card company and they told me that they automatically extend the manufacturer's warranty for an additional year (effectively doubling Sony's) and if the computer is damaged due to mishandling or some other unfortunate incident, they will repair or replace for free. I did not pay any additional money for this.
Now, I don't know how good their repair services will be and I hope to never find out. But I am glad that I did not spend the large amount to extend the warranty through Sony or Best Buy. Food for thought for you. It may be a good idea for all of you to check with your card company to see if they cover you. What do you guys think?

Some cards are better than others at this. Amex is quite good; I have a platinum chase that does it well also.
My main issue is that I don't like relying on an out of warranty laptop for work, so I usually need a 3 or 4 year plan which the CC's don't cover.
If I were paying for it out of my own pocket I'm nearly positive I'd do exactly what you're doing, though. -
With my Mastercard you just submit a claim and they cut you a check for the repair, I have done it a number of times.
You can either submit the final bill or a quote. Its awesome. You can also pick where you want it repaired.
It was great for the many times my macbook pro and ibooks broke down. D: -
I think my credit card offers this but I have to enroll first. From what I saw, it might cover it up to 5 years after purchase but I am not certain what restrictions it has.
