I was looking at the FE's again on SonyStyle.com and when I customized one and placed it in my shopping cart the following note was attached:

    Shipping availability:
Production begins on or about Apr 03, 2006. Please allow 5-7 days after this date for production to complete.

Didn't the same message say the production start date for the customized FEs was on or about March 6th?

I gotta say, I like the FE, but another month delay with no guarantee that this is the final delay might just what it takes to send my money elsewhere.

Anybody out there that has already ordered a customized FE hearing this from Sony?

What about those of you that have "pre-ordered" ready to ship FE590s. What is the latest you are hearing about your ship date?

Sadly this is common with notebooks using new technology. You can assume there's a shortage of at least one part. If you call sales they might be able to tell you, so you at least know if everyone's having the same issue. I woulsn't be surprised if it's Intel.

I understand the growing pains and delays associated with new technology but Sony originally stated that the release date for these notebooks was Jan/Feb 06. April 06 is two months after this timeframe, and they have been stringing everyone along without any real answers.

I'm not sure where the holdup is, but I don't think it's Intel. Dell has Duo notebooks on it wesite that when customized have a ship date of Feb 21.

It's just frustrating that Sony won't pony up and tell it's customers what the heck is going on. Especially since THEY ARE TAKING ORDERS that have these ship dates associated with them. It would be different if they were waiting to take orders until they are ready for production. At least that way you haven't committed to purchase based on faulty info, which keeps changing.

Sony was having a horrible time with Intel pre Christmas at getting enough chips, although I thought it was primarily in their desktops. That's what a sony rep that I know told me a couple months back... conveniently he's been mia ever since I found out about the FE and SZ, and actually had some serious questions for him

After reading this i called to see what was up.. because last week i was promised it would ship this week... He confirmed that my customized machine would ship around the end of this week... It sounds like they are delaying any future customized machines in order to catch up with all the previous pre-orders... but that is just me speculating...

The customized SZ140 I ordered on 1/24 is supposed to ship on 2/17 according to the rep I spoke to yesterday.

If it's a shortage of Duos I may be in luck because I ponied up for the 2.0 GHz and I doubt many folks have done that.

I'm just DYING to get my hands on this machine!

The customized SZ140 I ordered on 1/24/06 was supposed to ship on 2/17 according to the rep I spoke to on 2/13/06.

I received an email at 00.25 AM 02/17/06 AM EST informing me that "Production has begun on your new VAIO PC!"

Checking my order URL, I find that I'm "Scheduled for Production" on 02/16/06, whatever that means, with ship date unknown.

Re-checking, just now, I find my "Estimated Ship Date" is 02/23/06

On 1/24/06 I ordered a customized SZ140: 2.0 Ghz Duo, 1 GB x 1 chip RAM, no Biometrics, +Webcam, + 80 Gb Hdrive, no DVD burner, black keyboard.

So, I think things are moving along; just not as quickly as I'd like or what Sony promised.

estimated shipping date totally depends on your specified spec I think

    I tried FE with
    7400
    T2500
    60gb

those are only settings I changed
and it tells me estimated shipping date is feb. 20th (tomorrow)
but if I add the camera to that
    it becomes april...
so I think they are scarce in cameras?
unless camera is your essential take it out if you want your laptop now! :)

Customized SZ140: 2.0 Ghz Duo, 1 GB x 1 chip RAM, no Biometrics, +Webcam, + 80 Gb Hdrive, no DVD burner, black keyboard
