    Hi,

I'm considering buying a new Sony Vaio and noticed that the memory is 1Gb of RAM, but it's DDR333. However, I've been told the latest is DDR-II.

Just wondering if DDR333 memory can be upgraded to DDR-400 or DDR-II?

If not, is there a big diff in performance between these memory standards/speeds?
And does it only matter for games and video editting, CAD/CAM sort of work?
(I'll only be using the laptop for wi-fi surfing, MS Office stuff, Acrobat, watch & burning DVDs, etc.)

Thanks for your help in advance.

    Raj

No, you cannot put a DDR2 memory on a DDR slot. You can put a DDR-400 on a DDR-333 slot, but it will still be running at 333 and you don't get any benefit of putting a 400 in it.

As for the performance, seriously, you won't notice the difference between DDR2 & DDR in most applications, even games.

    Really!?

So what's the benefit of going for the more exp DDR-II?

and does the HDD speed make a big diff?

    Thanks,
    Raj

The benefit of DDR-II? Well, they DO improve your memory performance, but in most cases your system performance bottleneck is not the clock on the RAM. The honor of system performance bottleneck belongs to HDD (and video card for applications that need graphic power).

Another benefit of DDR-II is a lower voltage, which can help you get extended battery life (eventually). And as said above, you won't note a performance increase, maybe in some benchmarks, but it won't change yor life.... :)
