EDIT: Ok I got to clear some things up. I thought this topic died long ago.

    1. If the VAIO on newegg is indeed a genuine product with the serial number still intact, it is covered by Sony's 1 year limited warranty. It also has to be a USA model (which the SR129 is) in order to be eligible for warranty repair in the USA.

    2. Whether or not newegg is selling pre-production/grey market/ect.. VAIO SR129 is indeed hearsay. No one has reported actually receiving the laptop yet (even though it has been on the site sinCe 7/15 and has 3 day shipping, which I find odd)

    3. Newegg is trustworthy in my opinion, on many things, such as RAM, which I just recently purchased. However, I read over 90 reviews on newegg on that exact RAM before I purchased it. 90 positive reviews says alot. The SR129 has none yet. Just because, OMG, it's newegg, doesn't mean it's God and doesn't make mistakes.

    4. Stop saying there's no tax. Californians still have to pay tax. I believe there's other states that have to also, but not all.

    5. Newegg is not an authorized Sony dealer.

    A)Sony reps. have said it

    B)The sony website proves it

C)Newegg can't contest it.Their representatives are bluffing and that alone in itself is fishy. I asked for email confirmation of it and have yet to receive it and it has been 8 days (rep. said it would take 2 days max.)

    6. Once you buy on newegg, you MUST keep the laptop. Exchanges can be made for defective items, but NO REFUNDS.

Newegg has excellent customer service but if for some reason you don't like the laptop. you have to pay stiff restocking fee after your return it. With Sony Style, there is no restocking fee at all. You are just responsible in paying the shipping cost back to Sony and if you pay shipping cost when you order the laptop, the shipping cost will not be refunded.

Newegg states on their site that manufacturer's warranty still applies to all their products. Sony Style wants people to pay the premium for sony, of course they'll say that newegg is not authorized if the pricing is very competitive. Either way i'll be the guinee pig. Im gonna buy from newegg since I don't plan to return the laptop anyway unless its damaged and that would be covered by sony warranty.

newegg vaios are not covered by sony. Dude many retailers have cheaper vaios then on sonystyle like costco, bjs, etc. and if you ask sony about that they will tell you that those are authorized dealers and therefore the warranty stays.

Using a laptop is a very picky and subjective matter. While the laptop may work 100% perfectly, you may not like the keyboard. It may be too hot or noisy. You may not like the screen etc etc. These are the complaint that Sony warranty won't cover since the same laptops are all like that by design.
I suggest that you at least try it first from nearby store that has the laptop you want on display or buy from one that doesn't charge restocking fee.

I bought my FZ and I returned it 3 weeks later. Among other things, I don't like the fact that the screen slightly wobbles when I type fast. Sony returned all my money within 48 hours. Had I bought it from newegg, I would have to suck up more than 250 bucks for nothing or worse, not being able to return it at all and be stucked with a laptop that I don't like.

I've had no problems with Newegg. I've been using them for server & desktop parts for years. Their shipping speed is mind-boggling. I've ordered two Vaios from them; on average they were around $400 cheaper than comparable models on SonyStyle. It's also convenient that I can order notebook upgrades at the time of purchase. Lastly, (in my area at least) they don't charge sales tax unlike Sony.

As for returns/replacements they present a whole screen during the checkout process explaining the policy if you have a notebook in the cart. If you blindly clicked 'Continue' without reading you have no one to blame but yourself.

    From newegg's vaio sr page:

Below is a summary provided for convenience only and may not be accurate or current. Click here for full details.

    * Manufacturer Limited Warranty period (parts): 1 year
    * Manufacturer Limited Warranty period (labor): 1 year

So, I just called sony today and said that if i buy from newegg, since its not an authorized dealer (unlike bestbuy, CC, costco, ect..) then the 1 year warranty is not included. Thus, as newegg admitted, the information is indeed INNACURATE.

This sort of thing really sucks. That restocking fee is simply 'unfair'- especially for online purchase

A new law will soon be introduced by UK Govt which will force the retailers to take full responsibility of the products they sell. So far, in some cases, retailer simply says that if something goes wrong then then the consumer should send it to the manufacturer.

I appreciate the fact its slightly different situation we're discussing, but have a look at your "consumer protection law"

    I agree to that...
recently i was chatting with a newegg CSR and she was trying to convince me that they are official reseller of sony. then i showed her the webpage from sony's website which clearly tells who are resellers and newegg is not there she got irritated and said "but we are official reseller".
    I think its fishy...

The only two disadvantages for ordering from SonyStyle are:
1.) They don't have the product to ship now.
2.) Sales tax. No tax at Newegg if you are not in California.

It is curious that Newegg has these, and that SonyStyle does not have stock.

Newegg would not sell a grey-market SONY item, don't worry about it. If they are selling it, it has the 1 year SONY USA warranty.

The SonyStyle phone reps are trying to scare people out of buying from Newegg so that you will place an order with them. They earn commission for their sales, so ignore them.

The disadvantages of the Newegg model are that it can't be customized at all, and will cost you $200 if you hate it.

But, it is less money than buying from SONY, no tax, free shipping. The price is the price.

More and more places want the 15% restock fee. Basically, what do you do with a laptop that has been used for a few hours and can't be sold as new? It becomes "open box", "outlet" or whatever.

Newegg is a fantastic online merchant. I noticed that they are now starting to sell lots of other categories, from stoves to running shoes. Hopefully this will not be a bad move for them.

For me, SonyStyle remains the best option for ordering a new SONY notebook. That is, when they can deliver one.

I am saying that, based on the stellar ratings of newegg.com I would be stunned if they are selling grey-market goods.

Some people already received or should soon receive these notebooks from newegg. What does the warranty card say? Post a link to an image of it.

That will end speculation on this issue.

I tried my google skills for sony not honoring the warranty on a vaio bought on newegg. There are bunch of vaio notebooks on newegg and I am sure there would have been problems. Can someone search for someone whining somewhere on the internet that he bought something from newegg and sony refused to repair??

    It has to be nonsense.
As I said, Newegg is too good a vendor overall to have suddenly gone grey-market on these items.
As I said, as soon as someone gets one, scan the damned warranty card or just confirm that it is a SONY USA warranty.

    Aamsel, two points

    1. Just because Newegg doesn't collect sales tax at the time of purchase doesn't mean you're not still liable for it. You are supposed to report the purchase and pay it at tax time, at least that's how it is in the state where I live. So, it's not really tax-free, just tax-deferred. I suppose if you 'forgot' you would probably get away with it, though.

    2. Read the Newegg policy link I posted earlier in the thread. You can't return a laptop to Newegg for a refund AT ALL, let alone for a 15% restocking fee. People need to be aware of this when making their decision, and it doesn't help to keep talking about restocking fees that don't exist.

Well, this is all moot, because I am unlikely to buy this Newegg offering, but...
It may be "Non Returnable" but that doesn't mean that Newegg won't take it back. If it arrives defective they will replace it.

Nobody has seen these notebooks, they may be wonderful, and may not be. Ordering one from Newegg to get a look at one is probably a bad idea.

How about a "thread redirect" instead?

When are any of the new SONY models supposed to surface at BB, CC, FRY's, or any "office store"??

Anyone have "insider information" on this question???

I meant real consumers getting them for the first time, not a couple of reporters at a press release staging in Germany. I don't think we have even seen any major reviews of the SR or the Z, have we?

If yes, please direct me to any links to them.

The sony rep says so & thats proof . It also says so on thier website . Well i must be very special then because i have returned a laptop to sony that was purchased at newegg & was repaired free under warrantee & sony was even kind enough to send me a prepayed fedex box to ship the laptop to them in .

I have purchased at least 20 vaios over the past 12 yrs or so & have had to return to sony for warrantee repair 3 times & not once did they hassle me about where it was purchased .

Sony by law cannot void your warrantee because you bought from a unauthorized dealer reguardless of what their reps claim . The only time they can deny warrantee is from ebay type sales . You can buy from ubid.com which is not a AUTHORIZED dealer & the warrantee is still honored by sony . Whether its refurbished with a 30 day warrantee or brand new with a yr warrantee .

Sony reps will lie thier ass off , which unfortunatly today is all to common .
